Title: Sickle Cell Disease

1
Sickle Cell Disease
  • Avital Howard

2
Sickle Cell disease
  • Also referred to as Sickle Cell Anemia

3
Mode of Inheritance
  • People who have Sickle Cell Disease have a
mutation in a gene (Hemoglobin gene) on
    Chromosome 11.
  • Inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern.
  • About 1 out of every 500 African American babies
born in the United States has Sickle cell anemia.

  • Homozygous
  • Recessive
  • Dad
  • Homozygous dominant

5
Symptoms of the Disorder and Detection
  • If you have Sickle Cell Disease your oxygen is
prevented from reaching your spleen, liver,
kidneys, lungs, heart, or other organs, causing a
lot of damage. Your cells from organs will begin
to die if you dont have enough oxygen.

6
Detection
  • Most doctors screen newborns for sickle cell
disease by doing a blood test.
  • If the disease is not detected at birth then you
can use a blood sample in a test called
    hemoglobin electrophesis.

7
Prognosis
  • Patients who have sickle cell disease have a
survival rate of 85.6 percent at 18 years old
  • Patients with less severe forms of sickle cell
disease had a survival rate of 97.4 percent at
    18.
  • Penicillin Babies and young children with the
disease must take this medicine daily to prevent
    potentially deadly infections.
  • Folic acid Some patients might take this
medicine to help build new red blood cells.

8
Genetic Counseling
  • A genetic counselor would be able to look at your
genetic material and let you know if you might
have the disease, and if you do what the chances
are of you having a child with the disease.

Additional Interesting Facts
  • Unlike normal red blood cells, which can live for
    120 days, sickle-shaped cells live only 10 to 20
    days.
  • Sickle Cell Disease is most common among people
from Africa, India, the Caribbean, the Middle
    East, and the Mediterranean.
