1. An Overview
  • The KBSM Science Form 4 textbook is written in
    compliance with the Curriculum Specifications for
    Science Form 4, developed by the Ministry of
    Education, Malaysia, in the year 2004.
  • The purpose of the book is to provide students
    with scientific knowledge, as well as to equip
    them with the ability to employ the processes of
    science to discover scientific knowledge for
    themselves. The book helps develop the students
    scientific skills and train them to carry out
    scientific research the way scientists do. In
    addition, the book also inculcate moral values
    and the spirit of patriotism among the students.

2. Opening page
  • The opening page of each chapter consists of the
    following
  • A mind-provoking introduction to the chapter,
    which always contains questions to arouse
    students interest and curiosity.
  • Learning objectives of all the subtopics in the
    chapter.
  • Keywords used in the chapter
  • Interesting photos related to the chapter.
  • Examples Pages 1,14 and 47.

3. Set induction
  • There is set induction for almost all sub-topics
  • Set induction using photos or cartoons to arouse
    students curiosity to lead them into the
    sub-topic
  • Related to daily life as far as possible
  • Examples Pages 9, 15 and 109.

4. Content
  • Uses simple English geared towards the level of
    the students
  • Precise and concise language
  • Systematic one concept leads to another in an
    orderly manner
  • Diversified activities hands-on and minds-on,
    including experiments, collecting data,
    brain-storming, role-play. Examples pages 9 and
    15.

  • Side-features lead students beyond the syllabus
    for a more balanced development these include

6.End of chapter
  • There is a concept map to link various concepts
    in the chapter. This helps students to see the
    overall picture of the chapter. Examples pages
    41 and 147.
  • There is also a chapter review for students to
    recall salient points of the chapter. Example
    page 42.

7. Assessment
  • There is self-assessment in the form of formative
    questions at the end of every subtopic. This
    helps students to evaluate their mastery of the
    concepts. Examples pages 91 and 115.
  • Assessment at the end of every chapter is in the
    form of summative questions. The questions are
    geared to the latest SPM format to prepare
    students for the public examination. Examples
    pages 131, 132 and 133.

8.MyCD
  • This textbook is accompanied by a user-friendly
    CD-ROM.
  • Sections in the book which have related
    activities in the CD-ROM are indicated by icons
    (e.g. pages 3, 12 and 27).
  • Students can access the CD-ROM for reinforcement
    of what they have learnt in the textbook.
