Effects on the baby
  • The baby could be born with a smaller skull than
    normal.
  • The baby could have abnormal facial features.
  • The baby could be born with Mental Retardation.
  • The most common disease with drinking while
pregnant is F.A.S., which stands for fetal
    alcohol syndrome.

3
Statistics
  • Each year up to 40,000 babies are born with an
    alcohol related birth defect.
  • 13 of woman admit to drinking during the
pregnancy, 3 of woman admit to binge drinking
    while pregnant.

4
Why is this a higher risk earlier in the
pregnancy?
  • Its more fatal earlier in the pregnancy because
alcohol breaks down into a cell-damaging compound
that is absorbed by the fetus, during the first
trimester the fetus does not have the strength to
    fight it away.

5
How do materials pass through the mother?
  • The alcohol along with the nutrients from the
maternal blood, where all the nutrients are found
flow through the placenta. They then diffuse, or
transport into fetal blood. This fetal blood is
transported to the fetus through the umbilical
cord. . The fetus is living and growing inside of
    the uterus.
