Title: Paraphrasing versus Quoting

1
Paraphrasing versus Quoting
  • from Section 4 Collecting Information and
    Planning an Argument

2
Introduction
  • The importance of paraphrasing, quoting, and
citing what one borrows from others cannot be
    stressed enough.
  • To not cite where a quotation is found is to
steal from that person therefore, all borrowed
    material/ideas must be cited.

3
When to Use a Quote
  • Ask the following questions when deciding how to
    use a quote
  • Is the information significant enough and worded
interestingly enough that it should be placed
    within quotation marks?
  • Is the material considered common knowledge?
  • Have you represented the authors ideas honorably
without changing the meaning of his or her
    statement?
  • Have you parenthetically cited any material that
influenced ideas represented in your paper?

4
Paraphrasing
  • Paraphrasing quotes is an effective part of
writing ones voice into a paper. Paraphrases
should be used to create brief portions of an
argument you are writing and discussing.
  • Parenthetical documentation, a citation the shows
the author and page from which the information
has been borrowed, is required in paraphrasing as
in all forms of borrowing material from others.
  • See pages 187-9 in Peterson for further
    explanation.

5
Direct Quotes
  • Use direct quotes to punctuate the writing, but
they should not be the writing. Use Petersons
bulleted items on page 189 to guide you in using
direct quotations. Use a direct quote if you
cannot think of a better, more perfect way to
state what the author has stated.
  • The paper is yours, so make it your own!

6
Block Quotations
  • Block quotations are used sparingly and when a
quote runs longer than four lines or forty words.
Format a block quotation by using the following
    guidelines
  • Enter down one space from the end of where your
writing stops and click the Increase Indent
button twice on the formatting toolbar.
  • Do not use quotation marks, as the block
indenting serves as the quotation marks.
  • Place the final period before the parenthetical
    reference.
  • See pages 190-1, in Peterson for an example.

7
Mixing it upUsing Quotes in Paraphrases
  • By summarizing and paraphrasing, a writer can
assert his or her personality and voice into a
    paper.
  • This can also be accomplished by incorporating
portions of direct quotes in ones sentence.
  • Not every quote must begin and end a sentence
Part of another authors statement that adds
pizzazz or that cannot be worded in another way
to accurately show what an author intends to say
can be added into a writers paper.
  • See Figure 11.4, page 191, in Peterson for an
    example.

8
Plagiarism
  • Plagiarism is passing off the work of another as
ones own writing. To state it bluntly,
    plagiarism is stealing.
  • A writer can plagiarize by
  • not paraphrasing, quoting, or citing a quotation
    borrowed from another source,
  • buying and turning in the work of another,
  • or copying and pasting whole or parts of another
persons work into his or her paper.
  • See page 193-51 in Peterson, sections 10d and 10e
in Raimes and Consequences for Plagiarism at
Lake Land College for guidance in avoiding
    plagiarism.

9
Conclusion
  • A PowerPoint presentation cannot possibly answer
all of your questions about documentation of
sources, so read your assignments in the books
and email me questions or portion of your paper
if you are uncertain about properly documenting
    sources.
