To be covered in this unit
  • Where does tectonic activity occur why?
  • Plates and types of plate boundaries
  • Type of tectonic activity at each plate boundary
  • The effects of a volcanic eruption or earthquake
on people (social, economic and environmental)
  • Planning and preparing for hazards
  • Coping with the effects of hazards

5
Starter Activity 1
  • Look at the statements in front of you and
    discuss the following questions
  • What do these statements prove?
  • How does this relate to natural hazards?
  • The continents were once all joined together and
    have since moved.
  • Plate movements cause earthquakes and volcanoes

6
Structure of the Earth
6380 km
Crust 8-65 Km thick
7
The Crust Plates Activity 2
  • The crust is divided into several plates which
Float on the molten magma in the mantle.
  • Label on your map the names of each of the plates
from Fig 3 on page 79
  • Shade on the map the areas of earthquake and
volcanic activity (use Fig 2 on page 78)
  • Write 10 bullet points that describe the location
    of earthquake and volcanic activity
  • Use continent names, plate names, country names,
    ocean names and compass directions

8
Activity 3
  • Explain how tectonic activity and the location of
    plates are linked
  • Do Q3 and 4 from page 79 full sentences

9
How do the plates move?
  • Convection Currents

Cooler temperatures at the crust make magma
solidify it becomes dense and heavy so it sinks
Heat from core (which is 5500ºC) makes magma melt
it becomes less dense so it rises through the
mantle.
10
Convection Currents Activity 4
  • Draw and label Figure 4 from page 79
  • Explain in your own words how convection currents
work and how they make plates move.

11
Plate Boundaries
  • There are 4 types of plate boundaries
  • Conservative
  • Collision
  • Constructive
  • Destructive

12
Activity 5
  • Use page 78-79 to complete a table like the one
    below

13
Activity 6
  • Draw and label diagrams of each plate boundary
  • Explain in your own words what is happening at
    each plate boundary.
