Title: By George Orwell
11984
2WAR IS PEACE
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
3THE PARTY
- They are a totalitarian regime who have in common
with the Nazis and the Communists their ideas on
a state controlled country with no minority
people or any religion only the Party! - But they also are dissimilar to these groups as
they say that the reason the Nazis and Communists
fell is because they let their enemies die as
martyrs. But instead they, the party, torture
their enemies until they come to love the party,
then they kill them.
4Winston Smith
- He works for the party.
- He lives at Victory Mansions.
- He secretly hates the party and everything it
stands for - He falls in love with his workmate Julia.
- They meet and have a secret love affair
completely against the party. But how long can
this last before they are caught?
- Winston soon becomes a subtle rebel against big
brother and his Party joining up with O'Brien,
an inner party member who wants to take them down
from the inside. But can he be trusted?

6The Thought Police
Doublethink
Newspeak
These are all created by The Party The Thought
Police watch you and work as double agents for
the party. Doublethink is where you are powerless
to object when they abuse your mind by holding
two contradictory ideas which you know to be
contradictory but simultaneously believing both
at the same time. Newspeak is the new language,
many thousand words less than English.
7Storyline
- The basic story line is that soon Winston and
Julia get caught up in trying to deceive the
party along with an under ground cult. Trying to
find their way out of a world full of suffering,
oppression, torture and back stabbing. - They soon find themselves in a situation where
they are betrayed to the thought police and are
then captured to be sent to the feared, room 101.
But can they escape the trickeries of they party
and the ministry of love
8Ministry of peace
Ministry of Love
Ministry of plenty
Ministry of truth
9The ministry of truth, which concerned itself
with news, entertainment, education and the fine
arts . The ministry of peace, which concerned
itself with war. The ministry of love which
concerned itself with law and order. And the
ministry of plenty, which was responsible with
economic affairs.
The ministry of love was the really frightening
one. There were no windows in it at all. It was a
place impossible to enter except on official
business, and only by penetrating through a maze
of barbed wire entanglements, steel doors and
hidden machine nests
10Setting
The book is set in 1984 (although you probably
should have guessed that by now) but was written
in 1948. It was Orwells vision of the future on
the basis of how life was like at the time. It is
set in London, which is the capital of what was
England but now is Airstrip 1.
11OBrien
- He is an inner party member
- He is secretly part of the brotherhood along
with Julia and Winston and also initiates them
in. - He wears large glasses, is tall , middle aged
and has a come over - He is initially Wintons friend but can he be
trusted???
12conclusion
- This political satire is definitely a must read
as it is an classic which will force you to read
on page after page. - chilling yet fascinating view of the human mind
manipulated and manipulating.. - And, as many people have said before, a warning
to us all !!!
