FACT
  • There are 40.7 million 18-29 year olds in the
US.this is over twice the number of 66-77 year
    olds
  • Youth voting surged 11 in 2004 it remains to
be seem if the increase is a part of a new trend
    or just a spike!
  • 47 of 18-24 year olds voted (66 of 25 and older
    voted)
  • Young women voted at higher rates (50) than
    young men (44)
  • The surge in youth votes was driven by an
increase in voting among African American youth
    (11)

3
Did YOU know?
  • In the beginningonly white men who owned
    property could vote.
  • African Americans and many immigrants were kept
from voting for much of the 20th century, either
by physical intimidation or discriminatory voting
    laws.
  • Women couldnt vote until 1920, when the 19th
Amendment to the Constitution barely passed.
  • 18 year-olds couldnt vote until 1971, when the
passage of the 26th Amendment lowered the legal
    voting age.

4
Just Another Reason (or 3)Why We Do Vote Work
  • Personal contact is a more effective method of
persuading youth to vote than either direct mail
or telephone calls (and is much cheaper)
  • Youth asking their peers to vote raises the
    likelihood of turnout by 8-12
  • Personally contacting youth on Election Day can
significantly increase youth voter turnout, but
only if theyve already expressed interest in
    voting

5
Why Vote? THE ISSUES
  • Since 2001 fees have skyrocketed over 79 for
undergrads, 84 for grads, and up to 131 for
    professional students!
  • Low middle income students are the most
affected by rising fees total cost of
    attendance!
  • Cal Grant B has not increased in the past 20
    years!
  • The average student graduates with over 20,000
of loan debt and works full time every summer!
  • 1 in 4 students are forced to work more than 20
hours per week while in school!
  • Among its top comparison universities, UC ranks
highest in total cost of attendance lowest in
    percent of need met!

6
Why Vote? THE ISSUES
  • Skyrocketing grad fees translate into decreases
in graduate student enrollment, which negatively
    impacts UCs research undergraduate teaching
    capacity!
  • Professional students are finding it increasingly
difficult to complete their programs without
    incurring unmanageable dept sacrificing public
    interest careers!
  • Over the past 5 years state funding for Academic
Preparation Programs has been cut from over 82
    million to 17.3 million!
  • The year enrollment for entering Black/African
American first-year students is the lowest since
    1973!
  • State funding for higher education has dropped
from almost 17 to only 11.3!
