1Parenthetical Documentation
- Presentation by
- Mandy Dwight
2There are two types of documentation. They are
- Parenthetical Documentation- This is when you
copy ideas directly from a source, but put the
ideas in your own words.
- Directly Quoted Citation- This is when you copy
material verbatim from a source.
3This is an example of parenthetical documentation.
Original text from the article The Problem with
Superman written by Lev Grossman
He debuted in the 1930s, when Americans liked
their heroes like they liked their steaks tough,
thick, and all-American.
My parenthetical documentation of this sentence
Superman, who appeared in popular culture in the
1930s was loved not only for his strength but f
or his American identity (Grossman 1).
4This is an example of directly quoted citation.
Original text from the article The Problem with
Superman written by Lev Grossman Superman is
still the companys flagship icon, but Batman
outsells him, and the original superhero hasnt
starred in a movie for seventeen years.
My directly quoted citation Superman is still
the companys flagship icon, but Batman outsells
him, and the original superhero hasnt starred
in a movie for seventeen years (Grossman 1).
5Citations are always as follows (Steinbeck
43).
6How do I document my source if no author is
given?
If the authors name is not given, write the
title of the work that the documentation
comes from Name of Article/Name of Book pag
e Example (The Problem with Superman 1).
7Use Ellipses when you want to omit any part of
the sentence that you are citing.Ellipses can
be used at any part the sentence beginning,
middle, or end. There can be more than one set
of ellipses in a sentence.
