  • Keen athlete as a child
  • Became intrigued by sport psychology at age 12
    after brief encounter
  • Love all sportmoreover the nature of human
    behaviour in extreme environments
  • e.g., competition, stress, perfectionism,
    motivation, anger, attributions, pressure etc

Joint Honours in Sport and Exercise Psychology
  • At UQ, an Honours program is jointly offered by
    the Schools of Human Movement Studies and
    Psychology. As of 2000 the program involves
    completing a three year BA degree and then
    spending the fourth year completing the joint
    honours.
  • Entry to the joint honours year requires careful
    undergraduate course selection as the
    requirements for honours need to be met for both
    the School of Psychology as well as the School of
    Human Movement Studies.
  • Check the HMS Student Guide, the School of
    Psychology Handbook, and The UQ Undergraduate
    Handbook.

  • There are no full-time jobs
  • e.g., a PO3 salary hours 9am-5pm
  • Exception would be 3 jobs at AIS and a few at
    state academies or professional teams
  • All work is contract based
  • e.g., QAS squad, QLD Roar for season, individual
    clients (as per private practice)
  • Need to be self-motivated and a little business
    savvy

  • WARNING Athletes get up early to train!!
  • WARNING Majority of elite sport played on
    weekendsat night.
  • WARNING Most athletic centres are out of town
    (not CBD).
  • WARNING Most group sessions are only 45min long.
  • WARNING Athletes have very short attention
    spans.
  • WARNING one sport psych can service many teams

  • Those that are elite (e.g., QAS. QLD Roar)
  • Those that want-to-be(e.g., 16 yr old tennis
    stars).
  • There are more want-to-be than elite they pay
    your bills

    following criteria
  • Pass the requirements for the BA degree (outlined
    in the UQ Undergraduate Handbook)
  • Have a GPA of 5.00 or better for all 2nd and 3rd
    year Psychology courses listed in the enrolment
    plan listed above, and PSYC3000 (previously
    HMST3433).
  • Have a GPA of 5.00 or better for all Human
    Movement Studies courses listed in the enrolment
    plan listed above and a grade of 5 or better in
    PSYC3000 (previously HMST3433).
