What makes a good speech?
  • Know your audience
  • Be aware of your environment
  • Know your subject
  • Good speech construction
  • Props - how to, and when
  • Use your voice and your body
  • Learn to be comfortable

4
Know your audienceBe aware of your environment- 1
  • Delivery styles differ depending on your audience
  • Colleagues speaking at a staff meeting
  • Formal conference - learning session
  • Lunch speech - someone leaving
  • Budget request to managers - persuasion

5
Know your audienceBe aware of your environment- 2

    up.
  • After lunch?
  • Hot room? cold room?

  • Theatre style or podium?
  • Table for your notes? Wheres the projector?

6
Know your subject
  • Ya cant talk about what you dont know! Well ya
    can but.
  • Understand that you know more than your audience
  • Or why did they ask you?
  • Have your facts, figures, and story straight -
bring the back ups with you
  • For those really tough questions

7
Its all in the construction - 1
  • Every good speech has
  • A beginning
  • The introduction
  • A middle
  • The body of your presentation or speech
  • And an ending
  • The conclusion and wrap up.
  • Heres the secret.

8
Its all in the construction - 2
  • Tell em what youre gonna tell them
  • The introduction
  • tell it
  • The body of your speech
  • tell em what you told em!
  • The conclusion and wrap up.
  • Works every time!
  • And dont worry about the repetition.

9
Its all in the construction- 3
  • Have a theme or key ideas for your speech
  • Themes and key ideas focus your thoughts
  • Repeat your points
  • To emphasize your themes and ideas

10
Props Essential?
  • Think before using a prop
  • Why do I need this in my talk?
  • Props should enhance not detract
  • Does it add value to my talk? Is it clearer, more
    interesting, or
  • Will it take away from my presentation?
  • Power Point is a prop
  • Nothing worse than bad slides

11
Heres a bad one.
  • Text to small
  • Trying to write in sentences that cover all the
ideas which then forces the presenter to look at
the slides and read them, therefore turning her
back on her audience and no one can hear her
either! There is no adding value to anything she
is saying. Everything she needs to say is on the
    slide.
  • Pictures with no relation to the presentation
  • Sound effects that have no relation to the slide!

12
Voice Body Language 1
  • How do I look?
  • Dress for the audience and occasion
  • Its all in your posture
  • Stand tall and confident
  • Hand behind the back are more confident than
    hands in front
  • Use your hands for emphasis
  • Be natural, appropriate, definite and relaxed
  • BREATHE!

13
Voice Body Language 2
  • How do I sound?
  • Listen to yourself on a tape recorder
  • How fast do you talk?
  • How well do your pronounce your words?
  • Pitch inflection tone
  • Dont be afraid to use pauses
  • Use the microphone!

14
Learn to be comfortable
  • FEAR
  • Never goes away
  • Its normal to have some stage fright
  • Feel the fear and do it anyway!
  • Be prepared and know your stuff
  • Use your fear to get energy
  • No one feels your fear but you
  • Fake it til you make it!

15
Last minute tips
  • If you are well prepared your nerves work with
    you
  • Admit your nerves and the audience will be on
    your side
  • If youre not introduced, provide your own
    introduction.
  • Your elevator speech
  • Never bring a written out speech.
  • Use an outline and key words for key ideas.
  • Keep going and do what you were asked to do
  • Communicate and deliver what you know.
