Bursaries
  • What is a Bursary?
  • A non-repayable sum of money paid by universities
    or colleges to students who meet their
    eligibility criteria
  • It is paid in addition to student loans and
    grants
  • How much Bursary do students receive?
  • The amount students receive varies between
    institutions
  • Students should check with the university or
    college

Eligibility
  • Any student who is
  • a new entrant to Higher Education in 2008/2009
  • on a publicly funded, full-time course
    (undergraduate, Foundation Degree, or
    undergraduate Foundation Year)
  • where the Tuition Fee is at least 2835 and
    exceeds their Maintenance or Special Support
    Grant entitlement
  • is entitled to a Bursary from their university
    or college
  • arrangements for 2009/2010 may differ

Eligibility
  • Eligibility for a full Maintenance or Special
    Support Grant
  • If household income is below 25,000 per annum,
    students should qualify for a full Grant
  • If household income is between 25,001 - 60,005,
    students should qualify for a partial Grant
    2008/2009 rates
  • Eligibility if all these criteria are not met-
  • Some institutions offer discretionary Bursaries
  • Students should ask their institution if they are
    eligible

Applying for a Bursary
  • Students dont need to complete an extra
    application form
  • Instead they should apply for student finance as
    normal
  • Application to be received within 9 months of
    starting course
  • Application must be means-tested
  • Student and sponsors shouldnt Opt Out of the
    Data Share
  • Outcome of household income assessment will be
    released to university or college
  • University or college uses this to determine
    Bursary entitlement
