Title: THE BOOK OF
1THE BOOK OF I SAMUEL 2!
2THE OLD TESTAMENT HAS AT LEAST A TWO-FOLD PURPOSE!
3PURPOSE NUMBER 1 TO PREPARE MAN FOR THE COMING
OF CHRIST Gal 316, 24 16 Now to Abraham and
his Seed were the promises made. He does not say,
"And to seeds," as of many, but as of one, "And
to your Seed," who is Christ. 24 Therefore the
law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we
might be justified by faith.
4PURPOSE 2-- TO PROVIDE CHRISTIANS WITH
LESSONS/EXAMPLES OF GOD'S "NATURE! 1 Cor
106,11 6 Now these things became our
examples, to the intent that we should not lust
after evil things as they also lusted. 11 Now
all these things happened to them as examples,
and they were written for our admonition, upon
whom the ends of the ages have come.
5LET'S CONSIDER SOME SPIRITUAL LESSONS FROM 1
SAMUEL!
6LESSON 1 THE MISERY OF POLYGAMY!
7CONSIDER THE MAN, ELKANAH! 1 Sam 11-8 1 There
was a certain manof the hill country of
E'phraim, whose name was Elka'nah 2 He had two
wives the name of the one was Hannah, and the
name of the other Penin'nah. And Penin'nah had
children, but Hannah had no children. 3 Now this
man used to go up year by year from his city to
worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts at
Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and
Phin'ehas, were priests of the LORD.
84 And when the day came that Elkanah sacrificed,
he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and
to all her sons and her daughters 5 but to
Hannah he would give a double portion, for he
loved Hannah, but the LORD had closed her womb. 6
Her rival, however, would provoke her bitterly to
irritate her, because the LORD had closed her
womb.
97 So it went on year by year as often as she
went up to the house of the LORD, she used to
provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not
eat. 8 And Elka'nah, her husband, said to her,
"Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat?
And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you
than ten sons?"
10CONSIDER TWO OTHER EXAMPLES OF THE HEARTBREAK OF
POLYGAMY! 1. ABRAHAM 1) Gen.164f (Sarah
Hagar). 2. JACOB 1) Gen.2930 (Rachael
Leah).
11POLYGAMY IS STILL SIN TODAY! 1. We don't have
same kind today a) Our polygamy is more
subtle! 2. Unscriptural divorce
remarriage a) Matt.199 "..whoever divorces
his wife, except for sexual immorality, and
marries another, commits adultery.." 3. God
Expects MONOGAMY Today a) 1Cor.72 "..let each
man have his own wife...own husband."
12ANOTHER LESSON THE HEARTBREAK OF PARENTAL
INDULGENCE! 1. CONSIDER TWO EXAMPLES a)
Eli--1Sam.222-29 313 1) Didn't restrain
(More than talk). 2) Honored Sons above
God. b) Samuel--1Sam.83-5 1) Note Eli
raised Samuel! c) Both men personally
acceptable! 2. CONSIDER "OUR" RESPONSIBILITIES
a) Eph. 64 "Fathers, provoke not...children..."
13ANOTHER LESSONDONT TRUST IN "SACRED"
OBJECTS! 1. THE JEWS TRUSTED IN a) The ARK of
the Covenant 1) 1Sam.43 "...let us bring
the ark of... the Lord's covenant...and save
us from...our enemies.." b) The TEMPLE In
Jerusalem 1) Jer.73-15 "...do not trust in
deceptive words...The Temple of the Lord, the
Temple of the Lord, the Temple of the
Lord... c) LESSON God wont be "coerced"!
14- WE TODAY MUST NOT TRUST IN "OBJECTS!
- A "BLACK BOOK"--(Bible--not its contents).
- THE CHURCH (Saved on the merits of whole).
- 3. The Church BUILDING (A sanctuary).
- 4. A CRUCIFIX/STATUE or a BLESSED object.
15WE TODAY MUST TRUST IN GOD! Rom.81 There
isnow no condemnation to those who are IN
Christ CONSIDER HOW ONE GETS INTO
CHRIST! Gal.326f "For you are all sons of
God by faith...as many...as have been baptized
into Christ have put on Christ..."
16ANOTHER LESSON PARTIAL OBEDIENCE BRINGS
REJECTION! CONSIDER KING SAUL! 1Sam.1520-23
(He spared King Agag...) ..because you have
rejected the word of the LordHe has also
rejected you from being king.
17- CONSIDER THE TEMPTATION TODAY
- Accept faith, repentance and confession, but
reject BAPTISM! - a) Acts238 ..repent..bapized..remission.."
-
- 2. OR--Obey the gospel, but live ungodly
- a) Rom.61ff "..shall we continue in sin that
grace may abound?"
18CONCLUSION COMPLETE OBEDIENCE IS
ESSENTIAL! OBEDIENCE REQUIRED OF
JESUS! Heb.58f "Though He was a Son, yet He
learned obedience by the things which He
suffered AND IS REQUIRED OF US
TODAY! Rev.2012f "..the dead were judged
according to their works.."
19THE BIG QUESTIONHAVE YOU "COMPLETELY" OBEYED
THE LORD 1. Have you believe--Acts 1631? 2.
Have you repented--Lk.133? 3. Have you confess
Christ--Acts 837? 4. Have you been Immersed into
Christ? a) Acts 2216 "Arise and be
baptized and wash away your sins..."
20AS A CHRISTIAN, ARE YOU LIVING "OBEDIENTLY" TO
THE LORD? 1Sam.1520-23 "To obey is better
than sacrifice...to harken...than the fat of
rams..." Rev.210 "...be thou faithful unto
death...crown of life..."
21IF YOU DIED RIGHT NOW-- WHERE WOULD YOU
SPEND YOUR ETERNITY-- IN HEAVEN? OR HELL?
THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE!!!
