We Worship God

• When we hear the word Worship, what do you
  visualize or think about?
• One definition is, A feeling of profound love
  and adoration showing religious devotion to a
  deity. As Christians, we show this devotion
  (worship) to God.

• As in the previous lessons, we will again quote
  part of the vows that you will be asked to
  respond at confirmation.
• Do you promise, according to the grace given
  you, to keep Gods Holy will and commandments,
  and will walk in the same all the days of your
  life as a faithful member of Christs holy
  church.

Things that help us in Worship

• The Bible
• We have already talked about the Bible in
  our first meeting. It is really the basis of our
  faith because it tells us the stories of God and
  His Son, Jesus.
• Preaching
• Sometimes this is referred to as the
  Proclamation because the Pastor is proclaiming
  Gods word.
• Why is preaching important?
• What other ways are there to get Gods
  message across?

The Sacraments

• Baptism and the Lords Supper (Communion) are a
  very important part of worship. Methodists have
  always seen the sacraments as a means of grace.
  That means that we are really not worthy to
  receive these sacraments on our own, but we
  receive them through the grace of God. We talked
  about them last Sunday.

Music and Hymnals

• Music is a large part of our worship service.
  The service usually starts with a hymn of praise
  and ends with a hymn of invitation.
• What is a hymn of invitation?
• There is usually some special music. This takes
  place at the traditional service. What happens
  at the contemporary service?
• There is more than just music in the hymnals.
  There are special services, responsive readings
  called the Psalter and other acts of worship and
  creeds. The confirmation service is included in
  the hymnal.

Creeds

• The Creeds are what someone wrote down as their
  own personal beliefs and some of these creeds
  have been accepted by the church as a statement
  of what we believe as Methodists. The one used
  the most is the Apostles Creed. Others are the
  Nicene Creed, A Modern Affirmation and others.

OTHER WORSHIP AIDS

• Prayer- Prayer takes place quite a few times
  during the service. Pastor Mitchell opens the
  service with prayer, offering prayer for the
  gifts and the givers, the pastoral prayer, and a
  prayer of benediction at the end of the service.
• Bulletins-Hymn numbers, Scripture, and
  announcements of coming events, and a prayer list
  of or for people who have requested prayer.
• Offertory-Do any of you have a paying job or get
  an allowance? Do you give any to the church? Do
  you think you should?

Symbols

• Altar-symbolizes the presence of God. Whenever
  anything happened where the people felt the
  presence of God, they built an altar so they
  could offer up a sacrifice.
• Candles-The candles are lit to symbolize the
  presence of the Holy Spirit.
• Cross-Symbolizes the suffering of Christ. We use
  the empty cross to symbolize that Christ has
  risen from the dead.
• Open Bible-The Holy Scriptures which are the
  basis of our faith.
