Title: Why should you watch
1Why should you watch
what you do during your
pregnancy?
2Alcohol
- The fact that alcohol had a negative affect on a
developing baby wasnt known until 28 years ago. - Alcohol is now recognized as the most common
major destructive environmental agent to which a
fetus is likely to be exposed. It is directly
responsible for 10-20 of mental deficiency with
IQ's in the 50-80 range, and one in six cases of
cerebral palsy. - Infants with fetal alcohol syndrome tend to
exhibit poor growth and have small heads. The
average IQ for those with full-blown fetal
alcohol syndrome is 63. - Affected children tend to be irritable babies and
hyperactive children. - They characteristically have short noses and
thin, smooth upper lips. Their small upper jaws
tend to cause dental problems and repeated ear
infections. Small fifth fingernails can be a
telltale sign. Cardiac and joint problems are
also common.
3Marijuana
- Marijuana use can reduce fertility in both men
and women, making it difficult to conceive. - Marijuana use during pregnancy has been linked to
low birth weight in the baby and withdrawal-like
symptoms including excessive crying, and tremors. - Some studies suggest that children exposed to
marijuana while in the womb are at increased risk
of attention disorders and learning problems
later in life.
4Cocaine
- During the early months of pregnancy, it may
increase the risk of miscarriage. - Later in pregnancy, it can trigger preterm labor
cause the baby to grow poorly. - Cocaine-exposed babies are more likely than
unexposed babies to be born with low birth
weight. Low-birth weight babies are 20 times more
likely to die in their first month of life than
normal-weight babies, and face an increased risk
of lifelong disabilities such as mental
retardation and cerebral palsy. - Cocaine-exposed babies also tend to have smaller
heads, which generally reflect smaller brains. - Cocaine-exposed babies are at increased risk of
birth defects, including urinary tract infections
and, possibly, heart defects. - Cocaine also may cause an unborn baby to have a
stroke, which can result in irreversible brain
damage or a heart attack, and sometimes death. - Cocaine use also may cause the placenta to pull
away from the wall of the uterus before labor
begins. This condition, called placenta
abruption, can lead to extensive bleeding and can
be fatal for both mother and baby.
5Prescription and Over the Counter
Drugs
- Discuss the relative risks and benefits of any
prescribed drug therapy and do not take
over-the-counter drugs or naturopathic remedies
without first consulting your physician. - Prescription medications which, historically,
have been used often during pregnancy and that do
not seem to cause major birth defects or other
problems. Examples some antibiotics famotidine
and, some types of insulin. - Prescription drugs which, historically, have been
more likely to cause complications for the mother
or the baby. This class also includes those
drugs for which there is insufficient safety
data. Examples fluconazole ciprofloxacin
fexofenadine and, some antidepressants. - . The placement of a drug indicates that
"positive evidence of human fetal risk exists,
but the benefits from use in pregnant women may
be acceptable despite the risk," according to an
American College of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists report. Examples chemotherapy
drugs and phenytoin.
6Prescription/Over the Counter drugs Continued
- Prescription drugs that have demonstrated a
propensity to cause birth defects. The placement
of a drug into this class indicates that "risk in
pregnant women clearly outweighs any possible
benefit," according to the ACOG report. Included
in this most dangerous class are the acne drug
Accutane as well as the psoriasis medications
Tegison and Soriatane. - So ask your doctor if you know that you are or
you are going to be pregnant about which type of
medicine that you should use.
7Teenage
Pregnancy
- 11 percent of all U.S. births in 2002 were to
teens. The majority of teenage births about 67
percent are to girls ages 18 and 19. - About 860,000 teenagers become pregnant each
year, and about 425,000 give birth. - About one in three teenagers becomes pregnant
before age 20. - The teenage birth rate is declining. Between 1991
and 2002, the rate fell by 30 percent (from 61.8
per 1,000 women to 43).2 Still, in 2002 (the most
recent year for which data are available), about
4 teenage girls in 100 had a baby. - About 17 percent of teen mothers go on to have a
second baby within three years after the birth of
their first baby. - Teen mothers are more likely than mothers over
age 20 to give birth prematurely (before 37
completed weeks of pregnancy). In 2002, the 7,315
girls under age 15 who gave birth were more than
twice as likely to deliver prematurely than women
ages 30 to 34 (21 vs. 9 percent).2 Babies born
too soon face an increased risk of newborn health
problems and even death, as well as lasting
disabilities.
8Cost and Expenses
Having a baby is very expensive. It can range
anywhere form 3,000 to over a 100,000 depending
on what you get and what you need to do for your
child. If you have a child in your teenage years
then there is more of a chance for birth defects
and health problems. So with these defect and
problems it will cost even more then it normally
would for health care. If you have a baby and
smoked or did drugs during pregnancy then it
would cost more for health care.
9Prenatal Care
- Women who see a health care provider regularly
during pregnancy have healthier babies, are less
likely to deliver prematurely, and are less
likely to have other serious problems related to
pregnancy. - Teaches the woman about pregnancy
- Monitors any medical conditions she may have
- Tests for problems with the baby
- Tests for health problems in the woman
- Weeks 4 to 28 1 visit per month (every 4 weeks)
- Weeks 28 to 36 2 visits per month (every 2 to 3
weeks) - Weeks 36 to birth 1 visit per week
- A woman with a chronic medical condition or a
high-risk pregnancy may have to see her health
care provider more often. Make sure you go to all
your prenatal care appointments, even if youre
feeling fine.
10STD's
During Pregnancy
- STDs can cause cervical and other cancers,
chronic hepatitis, pelvic inflammatory disease,
infertility, and other complications. Many STDs
in women are silent that is, without signs or
symptoms. - Pregnant women should get tested for STDs
- STDs can be passed from a pregnant woman to the
baby before, during, or after the baby's birth. - Some STDs cross the placenta and infect the baby
while it is in the uterus. Other STDs can be
transmitted from the mother to the baby during
delivery as the baby passes through the birth
canal. - The harmful effects of STDs in babies may include
stillbirth, low birth weight, conjunctivitis,
pneumonia, neonatal sepsis (infection in the
baby's blood stream), neurologic damage,
blindness, deafness, acute hepatitis, meningitis,
chronic liver disease, and cirrhosis.
11Joys of a baby
- For some women, the moment they find out they are
pregnant, their sole focus is to be as healthy as
they can to benefit the life of the little one
inside them. For others, the second they lay eyes
on their newborn, they experience an overwhelming
sense of protectiveness for their child. Then
there are those who may take a little time to get
used to the tiny addition to their family, but
when they do, their love for their baby becomes
larger than life. - Your baby will amaze you with all the things
he/she notices even from a very young age. You in
turn will learn to look at the world through
their eyes, share their wonderment, and hey,
probably start noticing some interesting details
you would have been too busy before to care
about. - It may sound like a cliché but a baby does bring
great joy to all in the family. Grandparents,
aunts, uncles, and cousins will want to be part
of this special little person's life. A baby is
completely dependent on you, the parent. You mean
everything to this child... that's right,
EVERYTHING. When you realize this, many mothers
say it is as if their life has taken on a new
dimension. Personal goals start to change as you
have more things you want to accomplish such as
nurturing your baby and providing for your baby.
Your life has been enriched immensely, and it
will continue to be so. - With a baby, you begin to celebrate the little
victories they achieve. There'll be the first
time they smiled, the first time they turned when
you called out their name, the first time they
rolled over, the first time they crawled or
walked or clapped their hands, the first time
they said Mummy or Daddy. The first-list is
endless. Yet the joy and emotions you feel are
priceless.
- Remember that just because there is joys of a
having a child that it isnt good for you or the
baby to be conceived in your teenage years.
