2About Stella Burry Community Services (SBCS)
- Incorporated in 1995.
- Governed by a volunteer, community-based Board of
Directors and an Executive Director. - Employs over 80 professional staff engaged in the
provision of counseling and support services,
housing development and property management as
well as education and technical skills training
and business development. - During the past year, SBCS delivered services to
more than 500 individuals.

4Residential Programs
- SBCS is recognized as a leader in this province
for the development of supportive housing for
people with complex mental health issues and for
employment programs that teach real skills and
offer meaningful work experiences. - Approximately 40 of all SBCS program
participants are between the ages of 16-30. - Youth with serious mental health issues generally
enter through Naomi Centre or Emmanuel House.

Emmanuel House
Naomi Centre
- An alternative mental health treatment facility
for men and women aged 16.
- Shelter and support services for homeless women,
age 16-30.
6Carew Lodge
- Provides 14 safe and secure apartments for low
income singles. - An extension of 10 more units is planned.
7Women Offender Project - Carew Lodge
- A resource centre and support services for
women leaving prison. - Assists women with the transition back into the
community. - 1-800 number for women to call from anywhere in
the province. - Offers peer mentorship and peer support group.
- Provision of gender specific addictions
services. - Assistance with finding housing and the
provision of concrete services.
8Community Support Program
- Targets individuals with complex mental health
needs and histories of institutionalization. - Intensive service coordination 110 ratio.
- Accredited home care agency employing 20 staff.
- 73 fewer days in prison.
- 39 fewer days in hospital.
- 1.588M savings to federal and provincial
programs. - Vastly improved quality of life!
- 25 of participants are youth.
9Affordable Housing Development
- SBCS owns or manages in excess of 45
properties in St. Johns. - Seven homes acquired through the Surplus
Federal Properties Initiatives have
created a solid - base of equity which is being leveraged to
acquire other buildings for renovation into
affordable housing.
10Newest Housing Renovation
- SBCS will continue to use SFRPHI equity to
acquire additional properties. - Property is renovated into 3 units of affordable
housing. - Funding for renovation is provided by NLHC-RRAP.
- Renovations provide work placements for New
Beginnings participants.
11Linking Housing and Jobs
- SBCS residents and program participants are more
likely to succeed when affordable housing is
linked to education and employment supports as
part of an integrated program strategy. - Preparing people for work can only be successful
when linked to real jobs that can pay living
wages. - A number of youth have been employed in
renovation projects. - Establishing relationship with the Carpenters
Trade Union.

14Creating Food Services Capacity
- A café open to the public which will serve a
daily menu of fresh, wholesome food
usingnatural and local ingredients. - A meal service for program participants.
- A community kitchen that brings participants
together monthly to learn how to make nutritious
meals which they can enjoy at the café, and then
package up the leftovers for another meal at home.
- The program will be led by a professional chef,
supported by a team of New Beginnings/ HOPEworks
graduates who are training for the food service
industry in Newfoundland.
