An introduction toMetadata _at_ IWMI

2
What is Metadata ?
  • Metadata is definition data
  • It provides information about an object whether
    it is
  • a product e.g. bottle of milk, a book, a CD rom,
    etc
  • a dataset e.g. rainfall time series, survey data,
    GIS, etc
  • Exercise
  • Collect metadata about these objects,
  • We will ask metadata questions in a few minutes
  • Those who can answer our metadata questions
  • will keep the items !!

3
Metadata Exercise
  • First correct answer keeps the item
  • If no correct answer closest answer keeps the
    item
  • No answer then item goes to Abans

4
Definition of Metadata
  • Metadata refers to the use of a structured set of
elements to describe an information resource and
its intellectual property rights. The elements
used should assist in the identification,
location and retrieval of information resources
    by end-users.

5
Metadata for libraries
  • For example authors, year of publication,
    volume , etc
  • Also indexes, abstracts, and catalog records
created according to cataloging rules and
structural content standards, as well as
authority forms such as LCSH (Library of Congress
    Subject Headings)

6
Library metadata history
  • Such bibliographic metadata has been
cooperatively created since the 1960s and made
available to repositories and users through
    automated systems such as bibliographic
utilities, online public access catalogs, and
    commercial online databases.

7
Metadata Standards
The best one is the one that works for you / your
organization / your field
  • The 4th Dublin Core Metadata Workshop Report
DC-4, on WWW meta tag standardisation.
  • Application of Metadata Standards, paper of ISO
rules for development of metadata standards.
  • Attributes supported by the Harvest Gatherer html
    metadata tags.
  • CERES Standards
  • Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata
  • CDS (Catalogue of Data Sources) of the European
    Environment Agency.
  • Core Metadata Elements for Land and Geographic
Directories in Australia and New Zealand,
    metadata standard, databases
  • Dublin core metadata element set, draft metadata
    standard for the WWW.
  • EdNA Metadata Home Page, draft metadata standard
for the WWW in Australia (education), an
extension of the Dublin core, using the SCHEME
    attribute.
  • EPA Scientific Metadata Standards Project ,
    metadata standards
  • GILS, official US standard for administrations
(will probably be extended to world wide
    standard).
  • IAFA, metadata standard for FTP and other
    Internet documents.
  • Directory Interchange Format, the famous NASA
DIF, source of various derived standards and used
by the CEOS community and other directories
related to earth observation and environment.
  • FGDC Subcommittee on Cultural and Demographic
    Data (SCDD)
  • html 4
  • Metadata Standards Draft Implementation Guide for
    WAIS.
  • Metadata standards of the US Geological Service
  • Metadata Standards Draft Implementation Guide
  • Metadata Standards For Gap Analysis

Example of a metadata record
  • Found on the web in XML format
  • Imported into IWMI metadata server
  • http//dw.iwmi.org/m3cat
  • Describes a study to evaluate the effect of
    hydrologic restoration on the nesting
distribution of Roseate Spoonbills in Florida Bay
(USA) and surrounding mangrove estuarine habitats

But other Metadata is critical in personal
information management and for ensuring effective
information retrieval and accountability in
recordkeeping - something that is becoming
increasingly important with the rise of
electronic commerce and digital government

Library
Library Metadata consist of information, object
at the time when it is first created or digitized
Descriptive surrogates such as catalog records
and Dublin Core metadata
Overview of Abstract, keywords, Author etc.
Metadata used to describe or identify information
resources Available to repositories and users
information professionals such as museum
registrars, library catalogers, and archival
processors are using information that they create
to arrange, describe, track and otherwise enhance
