What is Headache?
  • A headache (medically known as cephalalgia,
    cephalgia)
  • a condition of pain in the head sometimes neck
or upper back pain may also be interpreted as a
    headache.
  • the most common local pain complaints.

3
causes
  • a wide variety of causes
  • eye strain,
  • sinusitis , encephalitis, meningitis,
  • cerebral aneurysms , brain tumors
  • head injury
  • tension headache.
  • dehydrated,
  • caffeine

4
types
  • There are four types of headache
  • Vascular
  • muscle contraction (tension)
  • Traction(Cervicogenic )
  • inflammatory.

5
Vascular
  • The most common type of vascular headache is
    migraine.
  • usually characterized by severe pain on one or
both sides of the head, an upset stomach, and, at
    times, disturbed vision.
  • Other kinds cluster headaches, high blood
    pressure (rare).

6
Migraine(with Aura)
  • Migraine accompanied or preceded by an aura
(neurological symptoms). Approximately 10 of all
migraine sufferers fall under the category
    "migraine with aura".
  • sensory disturbances, 10-30 minutes prior to the
    headache phase,
  • The "aura" can be zig-zag lines or spots in the
field of vision, tingling of the skin, dizziness,
    confusion, or blurred vision.
  • The headache usually lasts 4-72 hours,

7
Migraine(without Aura)
  • menstrual migraine
  • Migraine without aura typically lasts 4-72 hours,
    is most-often one-sided
  • frequently associated with nausea and vomiting
  • The pain sensation is generally throbbing or
pounding in nature, with a moderate to severe
    quality.

8
Muscular/myogenic
  • involve the tightening or tensing of facial and
    neck muscles
  • they may radiate to the forehead.
  • Tension headache is the most common form of
    myogenic headache.

9
Tension headache
  • The typical features of tension headache are
    generally a 2-sided, band-like, pressing pain
that does not seem to get worse with activity
    (unlike migraine).
  • The pain is usually mild to moderate in nature.
  • Stress does play a role

10
Traction and inflammatory
  • symptoms of other disorders
  • ranging from stroke to sinus infection.

11
warning signals
  • headaches can serve as warning signals of more
    serious disorders.
  • This is particularly true for headaches caused by
    inflammation, including those related to
meningitis as well as those resulting from
diseases of the sinuses, spine, neck, ears and
    teeth.

12
  • While statistically headaches are most likely to
    be harmless and self-limiting
  • some specific headache syndromes may demand
specific treatment or may be warning signals of
    more serious disorders
  • Some headache subtypes are characterized by a
specific pattern of symptoms, and no further
testing may be necessary, while others may prompt
    further diagnostic tests.

13
Diagnosis
  • X-ray
  • Computed tomography (CT/CAT)
  • magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Electroencephalogram(EEG)
  • Blood tests

14
Treatment
  • Medicine members of the NSAID class
  • Physiothearpy tension-type and cervicogenic
    headaches

15
Behavioral treatments
  • biofeedback therapy
  • relaxation training
  • cognitive-behavioral training (also known as
    stress-management training)
  • hypnosis

16
Physical treatments
  • electrotherapy
  • acupuncture
  • massage
  • cervical manipulation

17
Manipulative therapy
  • chiropractic care. (also known as spinal
    manipulation)

18
  • Manipulation
  • Others Regular exercise ,jogging

19
Traditional method
  • Massage techniques

trigger points
  • Massaging these trigger points can reduce the
pain and tightness in the muscles and can
decrease head pain and migraine in some
    sufferers.
