Title: Bedbugs Cimex lectularius in Hostels

1
Bedbugs (Cimex lectularius) in Hostels
2
Bedbug, adult female
3
Food for larvaes and adults
  • Warm blood
  • a beak (rostrum) is at the undersite of the head
  • If the bug dont suck the rostrum is tight at the
    body.

4
Undersite of the head with beak (rostrum)?
5
Medical importance of bedbugs
  • Transmission of pathogen germs is not known.
  • but
  • Skin-reaktions appear after blood-sucking
    typical pustules

6
  • The faeces are black droplets, typical for all
    bloodsuckling insekts.
  • The eggs are white and shining, to find between
    the black spots of faeces.

7
Life cycle of bedbugs
8
Development time (averange)
  • eggs ? 7 to 10 days (22 24C)?
  • Larvaes ? 5 instar larves, ca. 40 days (22
    24C)?
  • Adults females and males,
  • nating relativ soon after hatching to adult
    insects
  • Age of adult begbugs ca. 9 bis 18 months

Identification of infestation
  • Who in a hostel can detect an infestation?
  • A guest this is really bad
  • A technical Person if the Hostel this is better,
but even nit good, becaus he is not permanent
there, and if he detects bedbugs it is purely
    coincidental
  • Personal of Room-Service is optimal, because
they are there every day. They must see waht is
    going on in the rooms!
  • But personal must be trained!

11
how to react
  • immediately notify to a responsable person to
    start a bedbug-control,
  • lock the room
  • Inspection of all rooms above, below, left and
    right

12
Bedbug - Control
  • A professional Pestcontroller (PCO) must be
colled. He knows what to do!
  • Rooms must prepared all crack and crevices have
    to be opend
  • Control must repeated after 7 or 10 days, because
    of the time of egg-development.

13
Resistance-Problem
  • Resistance against actove ingredients of
    insecticides.
  • Resistances develop after many generations and
under permanent contamination of the same
    ingredients.
  • So Resistance is a hereditary process.

14
Resistance-Problem
  • In hostels, hotels, guesthouses etc. bedbug are
    allways imported !
  • Very rarly it is known where they came from
  • And one dont know, how often and white what
insecticides the have been controlled over many
    generations
  • To test if a resistance does exists ore not needs
some weeks, but we dont have time to wait for the
    result!

15
Resistance-Problem
  • What can we do to be quite succesful?
  • two treatments and
  • the second treatment with another insecticide,
that have an active ingredients from different
    chemical groop.
  • Doing so we are succesful, because it is very
seldom, that resistances exists to more than one
    avtices.
