PUBLIC RECOGNITION OF THE PROBLEM
Orange County Shoreline Feasibility Study

• In the recent past, the Orange County shoreline
  has been plagued with increased levels of
  bacterial loading in the coastal waters.

Public recognition of the Problem (cont)

• Microbiological Indicator Organisms
• (from previous environmental studies)
• Total Coliform - collection of relatively
  harmless microorganisms that live in large
  numbers in the intestines of man and warm- and
  cold-blooded animals. They aid in the digestion
  of food.
• Fecal Coliform - A specific subgroup of this
  collection is the fecal coliform bacteria, the
  most common member being E. coli. These organisms
  may be separated from the total coliform group by
  their ability to grow at elevated temperatures
  and are associated only with the fecal material
  of warm-blooded animals.
• Enterococci - formerly Streptococcus. they
  inhabit in humans and other animals the
  gastrointestinal tract and the female genital
  tract.
