Title: Cytology

1
Cytology
  • What is the history of the cell discovery?
  • 9/17/07

2
Invention of the Microscope
  • 1000 AD
  • the first vision aid was invented (reading
    stone)
  • 1284
  • the first eyeglasses were developed

3
  • 1590
  • Zaccharias Janssen and son Hans Janssen
experimented with multiple lenses placed in a
    tube.
  • Precursor to telescope and compound light
    microscope.

4
  • 1665
  • English physicist, Robert Hooke (1635-1703)
looked at a sliver of cork through a microscope
lens and noticed some "pores" or "cells" in it.

5
  • 1674
  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) built a
simple microscope with only one lens to examine
blood, yeast, insects and many other tiny objects.

    cells and bacteria.
  • He invented new methods for grinding and

9
Discovery of the cell
  • 1665
  • Robert Hooke looked at plant tissues.
  • Reminded him of a cork.
  • Called the tiny chambers cells.

10
Cell Theory
  • Three parts (Schleiden, Schwann and Virchow)
  • All living things are made of cells.
  • Cells are the basic unit of structure and
    function.
  • Cells come from pre-existing cells.

11
Cell Diversity
  • Size cells must divide volume increases faster
than the surface area if too large the cell can
    not meet its transport needs
  • Shape cells spatial arrangement often matches
    the role/duty of the cell
  • Cells
  • Communicate across distances
  • Form a protective layer
  • Find, cling to, and destroy invaders
