Title: Noahs Baptism
1Noahs Baptism
- Understanding Noahs Obedience Helps Us
Faithfully Follow God!
2Noahs Baptism Genesis 6-8
- Noah was not a target of the flood it was given
for the ungodly! - So why did God require Noah to build the ark and
bring those animals aboard? - The Bibles Answer
7By faith Noah, being warned by God about things
not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for
the salvation of his household, by which he
condemned the world, and became an heir of the
righteousness which is according to faith. (Heb.
117)
3Faith lets us see the unseen.
13All these died in faith, without receiving the
promises, but having seen them and having
welcomed them from a distance, and having
confessed that they were strangers and exiles on
the earth. (Heb. 1113)
- God saw it, because he willed it (and allowed
Noah to see it!)
10Declaring the end from the beginning And from
ancient times things which have not been done,
Saying, 'My purpose will be established, And I
will accomplish all My good pleasure' (Isa.
4610)
4Faith lets us see the unseen.
3I have declared the former things from of old
yea, they went forth out of my mouth, and I
showed them suddenly I did them, and they came
to pass. - Isaiah 483
8(50 yrs. before Babylon fell), Babylon is
suddenly fallen and destroyed wail for her take
balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed. -
Jeremiah 518
- Noah was required to build the ark as a
demonstration of his faith (it serves as lesson
for those to come). - God could have saved Noah from the flood by any
means which he might have chosen, but he chose
one that would prove Noahs faith.
5Faith lets us see the unseen.
The command
13And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is
come before me for the earth is filled with
violence through them and, behold, I will
destroy them with the earth. 14Make thee an ark
of gopher wood rooms shalt thou make in the ark,
and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.
(Genesis 613-14)
9These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a
righteous man, and perfect in his generations
Noah walked with God ...Thus did Noah according
to all that God commanded him, so did he.
(Genesis 69,22)
6Faith lets us see the unseen.
8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
(Gen 68)
- Christians walk by faith.
7for we walk by faith, not by sight (2Cor. 57)
- Nothing else pleases God and gives us hope.
6And without faith it is impossible to please
Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He
is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek
Him. (Heb. 116)
7Deliverance Punishmenton the part of God.
- Noah, although not saved from the flood, was
indeed saved from something! From what?
4For if God did not spare angels when they
sinned, but cast them into hell and committed
them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment
5and did not spare the ancient world, but
preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with
seven others, when He brought a flood upon the
world of the ungodly (2 Peter 24-5 NASB)
8Deliverance Punishmenton the part of God.
- Noah, although not saved from the flood, was
indeed saved from something! From what?
6and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and
Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to
ashes, having made them an example to those who
would live ungodly thereafter 7and if He rescued
righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct
of unprincipled men (2 Peter 26-7 NASB)
9Deliverance Punishmenton the part of God.
- Noah, although not saved from the flood, was
indeed saved from something! From what?
8(for by what he saw and heard that righteous
man, while living among them, felt his righteous
soul tormented day after day with their lawless
deeds), 9then the Lord knows how to rescue the
godly from temptation, and to keep the
unrighteous under punishment for the day of
judgment (2 Peter 28-9 NASB)
10Deliverance Punishmenton the part of God.
- Noah was not saved from the flood, but from the
sinful world around him.
8(for by what he saw and heard that righteous
man, while living among them, felt his righteous
soul tormented day after day with their lawless
deeds), 9then the Lord knows how to rescue the
godly from temptation, and to keep the
unrighteous under punishment for the day of
judgment (2 Peter 24-9 NASB)
11Deliverance Punishmenton the part of God.
- The event that separated Noah from the wickedness
around him was the flood!
8(for by what he saw and heard that righteous
man, while living among them, felt his righteous
soul tormented day after day with their lawless
deeds), 9then the Lord knows how to rescue the
godly from temptation, and to keep the
unrighteous under punishment for the day of
judgment (2 Peter 24-9 NASB)
12Deliverance Punishmenton the part of God.
7And the LORD said, I will blot out man whom I
have created from the face of the land, from man
to animals to creeping things and to birds of the
sky for I am sorry that I have made them. 8But
Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
(Genesis 67-8)
13Deliverance Punishmenton the part of God.
- The next question one might ask Why a flood?
20who once were disobedient, when the patience of
God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the
construction of the ark, in which a few, that is,
eight persons, were brought safely through the
water. 21And corresponding to that, baptism now
saves you-- not the removal of dirt from the
flesh, but an appeal to God for a good
conscience-- through the resurrection of Jesus
Christ, (1 Peter 320-21)
14Deliverance Punishmenton the part of God.
- The Noachian flood was to serve as a type the
anti-type is baptism for the remission of sins.
The flood represented baptism! - God used water to destroy the world of sin
because he knew that ultimately he would use
water to wash away sins.
16And now why do you delay? Arise, and be
baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His
name. (Acts 2216)
15Deliverance Punishmenton the part of God.
- A people now set aside for himself.
9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a
holy nation, a people for God's own possession,
that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who
has called you out of darkness into His marvelous
light 10for you once were not a people, but now
you are the people of God you had not received
mercy, but now you have received mercy. (1 Peter
29-10)
- God can foreshadow because he knows the future.
16The Flood Baptism
- Neither necessary in and of themselves, save that
God chose them
6and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and
Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to
ashes, having made them an example to those who
would live ungodly thereafter (2 Peter 26)
17The Flood Baptism
- Faith, then salvation by the flood
- Faith, then salvation by baptism
12But when they believed Philip preaching the
good news about the kingdom of God and the name
of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men
and women alike (Acts 812)
18The Flood Baptism
- After the flood, a new physical beginning after
baptism, a new life in Christ.
4Therefore we have been buried with Him through
baptism into death, in order that as Christ was
raised from the dead through the glory of the
Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
(Rom. 64)
19The Flood Baptism
- Both the flood baptism reflect Gods mercy
judgment - Mercy toward unworthy believers, judgment upon
unbelievers. - Water the point of separation between the saved
and the lost!
20A Critical look at1 Peter 320,21
20who once were disobedient, when the patience of
God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the
construction of the ark, in which a few, that is,
eight persons, were brought safely through the
water. 21And corresponding to that, baptism now
saves you-- not the removal of dirt from the
flesh, but an appeal to God for a good
conscience-- through the resurrection of Jesus
Christ, (1 Peter 320-21)
- 120 yrs. of preaching, Noah / longsuffering, God
21A Critical look at1 Peter 320,21
4Or do you think lightly of the riches of His
kindness and forbearance and patience, not
knowing that the kindness of God leads you to
repentance? 5But because of your stubbornness and
unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for
yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of
the righteous judgment of God, 6who will render
to every man according to his deeds 7to those
who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory
and honor and immortality, eternal life (Romans
24-7)
22A Critical look at1 Peter 320,21
8but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do
not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness,
wrath and indignation. 9There will be tribulation
and distress for every soul of man who does evil,
of the Jew first and also of the Greek, 10but
glory and honor and peace to every man who does
good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
11For there is no partiality with God. (Romans
28-11)
- In the greek text in which into the ark eight
entered in obedience to Gods word and were saved
by the flood.
23A Critical look at1 Peter 320,21
- What saved them was entering the ark, not simply
being in the ark.
24A Critical look at1 Peter 320,21
- Not many were converted during that time!
- Saved through, or by, water not from water! The
same element God used to save Noah and family he
used to destroy the wicked. - How was this? By caring them in the ark to a new
world free of sin. Water saved them, Peter
says! - Peter, in the next verse says water saves US!
25Noah was not saved outside of ark, but inside.
- Well, Peter does not say that Noah was saved
outside of the ark, but by water!
21And corresponding to that, baptism now saves
you-- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but
an appeal to God for a good conscience-- through
the resurrection of Jesus Christ, (1 Peter
320-21)
- Gr., literally water. Which the antitype also
now saves us, baptism. - Water saves us like it saved Noah!
26Noah was not saved outside of ark, but inside.
- How is this? Well, baptism is unto the remission
of sins. Acts 238 Mark 1616.
27Noah was not saved outside of ark, but inside.
- The sectarian says Baptism does NOT save us
Peter says that it does. Whom shall we believe,
accept as right? - You believe in water salvation we believe in
salvation by the blood of Christ". - He switches terms, from general (water) to
specific (the blood of Christ). Neither literal
water nor literal blood can save from sins.
28Baptism is an outward sign of an inward
cleansing.
- Scripture? None, only his ipse dixit!
- Baptism cleansing the conscience bothered by sin.
Conscience tells of guilt it solicits a
cleansing that comes from pardon of sins. - When one is baptized, because God forgives him,
his baptism becomes his demand or plea for a
conscience void of sin! What his con-science
sought, demanded, aspired, he received it!
Before baptism, conscience still burdened.
29Why do many reject the essentiality of baptism?
- In the Protestant Reformation (1500s) versus
Catholic clergy and meritorious works. - Pauls passages, not by works (Rom., Gal.)
- As such they arrived at a Faulty conclusion
anything that man does for salvation, in
obedience to the gospel, is such a work, and that
baptism fits that pattern!
30 The fallacy of that argument
- Ignoring the context of Romans, Galatians, etc.
- Refusal to apply the argument to faith, which
is also a work (of a sort)!
28They said therefore to Him, What shall we do,
that we may work the works of God? 29Jesus
answered and said to them, This is the work of
God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.
(John 628-29)
- (Note the do passages in Acts!)
31Conclusion
- We have seen that one of the great events of the
Old Testament, the Noachian Flood, was arranged
by God to foreshadow New Testament baptism. - This tells us something about the importance of
baptism it is not some minor doctrinal point,
but a significant part of Gods plan of salvation!
32Conclusion
- Have you died to sin in scriptural baptism
(immersion in water), washing away your sins (not
Adam and Eves), and rising to walk a new life in
Christ? - If not, why are you waiting?
- Arise and be baptized and wash away your sins,
calling on the name of the Lord, Acts 2216. - Calling on the name of the Lord describes what
you are doing when you arise and are baptized!
33Conclusion
- Noah was baptized (saved by water from a world
of sin, to live in a new world), because he was a
believer in the Word of God. - If you are a man of faith, you too will obey the
commands of Christ in the gospel and be saved. - And as a baptized believer, you will continue to
walk by faith and will be saved eternally by the
grace of God!
