Title: Welcome to the time of the Cyber Cafe

1
Welcome to the time of the Cyber Cafe
  • By Kelley Sanders and Chris Lancia

2
What is a Cyber Café?
  • The term Café came into use in Europe in the
early part of the 20th century. They popped up in
places such as Vienna, Paris and Berlin as places
    for friend to come together.
  • The Café of today remains a gathering place,
    bringing together friends, coffee, newspapers,
    and now the Internet.

3
Impact of the computer age
  • The computer has taken a place among
communications tools, providing the means to
write a quick email or send an instant message to
    a friend from nearly anywhere.
  • As the use of the computer becomes more
widespread, computer users have become expectant
of an environment that will allow them to use
those computers in a variety of places.

4
Enter the Cyber Café
  • The traditional Café has slowly given way to the
newer Cyber Café as computer users look to
combine a good cup of coffee and a little
fellowship with a place from which they can check
    their email or stocks.

5
Cyber Café Perks
  • Many of us, especially those on the cusp of
technology, feel the need to check email at least
once a day. The emergence of the Cyber Café
allows you to check your email when youre away
from home or even when youre having a cup of
coffee and realize its been a few hours since
the last time you were online.

6
Check this out
  • The above picture is of Easy Everything, the
biggest Cyber Café in the world. Its located in
New York City and has 800 Internet stations. The
connection speed suffers due to the number of
stations, but users can purchase time by the
hour, the day, the week, or the month.

7
Portable Cyber Cafés
  • Many companies are now taking advantage of the,
I need it now, attitude that has become
prevalent by offering portable set-ups that can
be installed at conferences and provide users
with the ability to surf the Internet and check
    email.

8
Fast foodfast Internet access...
  • Even so-called fast food restaurants are getting
into the game. McDonalds and Burger King offer
the ability to purchase Internet access through
    wireless setups in their restaurant.

9
Golden Arches
  • The following is an excerpt from a McDonalds
    press release
  • March 11, 2003 Selected McDonalds restaurants
in New York City now offer high-speed wireless
access for customers who are constantly
on-the-go and looking for a place to eat, rest
and log-on to their laptop computers. The pilot
    program currently includes 10 McDonalds
restaurants in Manhattan and is scheduled to
expand to several hundred restaurants in three
major U.S. markets by years end.
  • McDonalds is bringing broadband to Broadway,
said Mats Lederhausen, president of McDonalds
    Corporations Business Development Group.
McDonalds pioneered convenience so it makes
perfect sense for us to offer our customers a
great way to unwire, unwind, enjoy an Extra Value
Meal and catch up on email.
  • McDonalds is scheduled to test high-speed
wireless access in hundreds of restaurants in New
York City, Chicago and a major market in
California by the end of the year.
  • McDonalds is known for being at the heart of
where people work and live, so offering our
customers another value Internet accessis a
great example of being the most relevant choice
out there, said Lederhausen. Both McDonalds
and Intel understand how important value, speed,
convenience and ease of service are for todays
    time-pressed consumer.
  • For the next three months, wireless-enabled
laptop customers in New York City who purchase an
Extra Value Meal at participating McDonalds
restaurants will receive an added benefit -- one
hour of free high-speed wireless Internet access.
Customers also can purchase a single session of
up to 60 minutes for 3.00.

10
The King in the Boro
  • A local example can be found in Statesboro, where
a Burger King with wireless Internet access is
    located.
  • Unlike McDonalds, BK offers free access to
customers. They based the decision on the fact
that they are located in a college town, and
offering free Internet access would increase
    their customer base.

11
Access in Savannah
  • Unbeknownst to many, Savannah has a cyber café in
City Market. Bobas, a 24-hour coffee shop and
cyber café, offers drinks, sandwiches, pastries,
    and Internet access.
  • Were always busy, said employee Jeanine Evans.
The 24-hour access appeals to SCAD students, so
we see them at all hours of the day and night.

12
A Cyber Café at AASU?!?
  • Plans are in place to convert the lobby of the
Memorial College Center to a coffee shop and
cyber café. Students, staff, and faculty will be
able to have a cup of coffee and enjoy some
fellowship, while also being afforded the
opportunity to surf the Internet for free. Wired
and wireless access will be offered.

13
Chefs Tips on Cyber Cafés
  • Never look at naked pictures of your girlfriend
    at a cyber café.
  • Spilled beer and electronics dont mix.
  • You have no idea where that mouse has been.
  • That person youre propositioning online may, in
fact, be sitting next to you.
