  • 5th ruler of Ptolemaic dynasty.
  • Parents were King Ptolemy IV. and Queen Arsinoe.
  • Helped his people and country in many ways.
  • The Rosetta Stone honors him.
  • He was married to Cleopatra I.
  • His father died at age 42 resulting in him
    becoming pharaoh at age 5.

The Importance of the Rosetta Stone
  • It holds the key to Egyptian hieroglyphics.
  • Helps us learn how Ptolemy V ruled Egypt.
  • Helps learn how the Egyptians lived.
  • Helps us finally uncover Egyptian history.
  • People could read Ancient Egyptian for the first
    time in 1,000 years.
  • If someone could read the Greek on the stone,
    they could figure out how the Egyptian language
    worked.
  • If it wasnt deciphered we wouldnt know about
    the Egyptian language.

The Text of the Rosetta Stone
  • It was written by a group of priests honoring
    King Ptolemy V.
  • The Rosetta Stone says this
  • Ptolemy living forever beloved of Ptah.
  • The Rosetta Stone tells how the Pharaoh served
    his country and helped his people.
  • One quote incorporated in most laws and rights
    now are those who were in prison and those who
    were under accusation for a long time is freed of
    charges against him
  • Another quote is With propitious fortune King
    Ptolemy the God Epiphanes Eucharistos beloved by
    Ptah.

Thomas Young
  • Thomas Young was British and lived from
    1773-1829.
  • He spent his life as an inventor and then decided
    to try to decipher the Rosetta stone
  • He was a physician who determined wave-lengths.
  • After being an inventor he decided to begin new
    studies in Egyptology and fell upon the Rosetta
    stone.
  • He contributed greatly to subsequent deciphering
    of the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics writing.
  • Thomas Young and Jean Francois Champollion helped
    each other decipher the Rosetta stone.
  • In April 1802, both DeSacy and Thomas Young
    decided to decipher the Rosetta Stone.
  • He also figured out peoples names through
    cartouches.
