Title: The Benefits of Expanding Green Technology

1
The Benefits of Expanding Green Technology
2
What Is Green Technology?
  • Green Technology is a general term referring to a
growing number of sustainable and non-toxic
    products and production methods.
  • Examples of green technology can be founds in
    water purification, cleaning products, food
    production and waste management.
  • But one of the biggest components of green
    technology is Renewable Energy.
  • In the next few pages we will be exploring the
benefits of green technology in relations to
Renewable Energy and its effects on our everyday
    life.

3
What Does It Mean For You?
  • Investment in green technology for you and your
family not only benefits the environment, but
helps you enjoy your life in the long run.
  • Some advantages
  • Decreases the cost of energy
  • Government tax incentives to use renewable energy
  • Decreases air pollution
  • Cleaner water
  • Supporting domestic businesses
  • Improves vehicles
  • Improves housing
  • Overall better quality of life

4
What It Means For Our Economy?
  • According to the USDA, the green industry is is
one of the fastest growing segments of the
    nations agricultural economy.
  • Its projected that in the U.S. alone it will
generate 147.8 billon in output, 64.3 billon in
labor income and create 1,964,339 new jobs.
  • Converting to renewable energy also increases
    building construction, increases property values,
increases retail sales and tourism and decreases
    dependency on foreign resources.
  • It also encourages innovation and investment in
    domestic companies.

5
Current Renewable Resources
  • Hydropower This energy form derives itself from
the motions created by large bodies of waters
such as oceans and rivers. Electricity can be
    gathered through hydroelectric dams, small
generators, the natural kinetic energy of a river
and stored water that is pumped out when needed.
  • Wind Power Wind energy utilizes wind turbines,
windmills and wind pumps to create electricity.
The oldest forms of wind energy can be traced
back to the sails on boats. In modern times, it
is a reliable form of power with low ongoing
    costs.

6
Current Renewable Resources
  • Solar Power Solar Energy is one of the fastest
growing forms of renewable energy and can be
easily utilized on a consumer level in the form
of solar panels installed on the roof of houses.
Energy is harvested through sunlight using
photovoltaic (PV) or concentrated solar power
(CSP) systems and then converted to electricity.
  • Geothermal Power Geothermal power is the natural
energy stored in the Earths crust (i.e. magma,
hot springs). Power stations gather steam and hot
water deep in the earth and converts them to
    electricity for usage.

7
Emerging Technologies
  • Marine Energy Like hydropower, marine energy
uses the earths natural bodies of water to
create power. The difference is marine energy
focuses on waves, tides and the temperature of
the ocean. Due to proximity, the immense power
of the ocean can be utilized by most populations
    on earth.
  • Artificial Photosynthesis Artificial
    photosynthesis uses nanotechnology to convert
solar energy into carbon dioxide. The purpose of
this is to employ inexpensive, non-toxic and
stable conditions to create methanol that can be
    later processed into fuel.

8
Emerging Technologies
  • Cellulosic Ethanol Cellulosic technology takes
biomass (plant material) and converts it into
ethanol. Cellulosic ethanol takes advantage of
natural raw materials like corn and cane sugar
that can be easily grown and produced. It can
reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 85 when
    compared to standard gasoline.
  • Space-based Solar Power (SBSP) SBSP is an
emerging technology that gathers solar power in
space. Unlike regular solar panels that collect
energy on earth during the daytime and when there
is ample sunlight, SBSP uses orbiting satellites
in space that can harvest energy on a continual
    basis.

Your Voice Matters
  • Green technology and renewable energy will make
life better for us and our children in the long
run. However, it cant be done by scientists and
    researchers alone.
  • By opting for green products and green energy we
as consumers are influencing the market.
  • When we make green choices we are not only making
a statement, but are giving these companies and
research institutions the financial support they
need to continue their work and ultimately drive
    down prices for us.

10
By taking a stand and choosing green products and
renewable energy, you are adding to the growing
number of Americans who recognize the need for a
change.
