What is Dental Filling

• Dental filling is done in order to treat
  a cavity. In this, the decayed part of tooth is
  removed and then that area is filled.
• It can also be done for cracks and broken or worn
  out tooth .

Procedure

• The area around the tooth to be filled is numbed
  using local anaesthesia.
• The decay is removed using drill, laser, etc.
• Once the decay is removed, bacteria cavity is
  cleaned and space is prepared for filling.
• Special care is taken to protect the nerve, if
  decay is near the root of tooth, using composite
  resin, liner of glass ionomer, etc.
• Once the filling is complete, the polishing is
  done.

Types of Dental Filling

• Teeth filling can be done with
• porcelain, silver amalgam, gold, tooth-colored,
  composite resin fillings, etc.
• Type of filling to be done depends upon the
  extent location of decay, and cost of filling.
• The best type of filling is the metal free dental
  filling.
• For smaller decays composite resin filling is
  done and for larger ones porcelain is used,
  because both of them have good life and looks
  good.

Disadvantages of Metal Fillings

• It doesnt look good, not blends with the
  original colour of teeth and gets darker with
  time.
• There is mercury content in metal fillings and
  mercury is toxic for the body. Thus, dentists
  avoid to use amalgam fillings.
• Amalgam fillings hampers the environment as well
  due to the presence of mercury in it.
• Due to the above drawbacks of amalgam or
• metal fillings, it is recommended to have metal
• fillings ceramic or resin based fillings.
