Rainer Gruessner An Internationally Known
Surgeon Rainer Gruessner is an internationally
known general and transplant surgeon who lives
and works in Tucson, Arizona. He has been in
surgical leadership positions for sixteen years,
and was appointed chairman of the Department of
Surgery at the University of Arizonas College of
Medicine in 2007.

pioneer in the field of abdominal organ
transplantation. In pancreas transplantation, Dr.
Gruessner performed the worlds first
laparoscopic combined removal of a partial
pancreas and a kidney from a living donor to cure
the donors family member from diabetes. He was
involved in the worlds first split pancreas
transplant, curing diabetes in 2 recipients with
1 donor organ.

Cancer Expert Rainer Gruessners general surgery
interests are in the areas of pancreatic, bile
duct and liver cancer. At the University of
Arizona he operated on patients with liver and
pancreatic cancer from all over the Southwest. He
served as the surgical director of the
HepatoPancreaticoBiliary Program, a truly
multidisciplinary center providing patients with
some of the best care in the nation.
