2The AGCO Story! The Allis-Gleaner Corporation
(AGCO) started in 1990 with the purchase of
Deutz Allis Corporation from German-based
Kloeckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG. KHD, in turn,
had purchased portions of the Allis-Chalmers
agricultural equipment business five years
earlier. Since that time, AGCO has become a
worldwide farm machinery company through market
growth, strategic acquisitions and cutting edge
agricultural solutions.
3 AGCO Tractor History! AGCO was born when the
US management of the Deutz-Allis corporation
bought out the North American side of the company
and renamed it the Allis-Gleaner Company
(AGCO). Tractors were distributed under the
AGCO Allis name. AGCO acquired White in 1991,
Massey Ferguson in 1994, Fendt in 1997,
Caterpillar's Challenger line in 2002, and Valtra
(formerly Valmet) in 2002. In 2001, The AGCO
White and AGCO Allis names were dropped in favor
of the AGCO brand. In 2009, it was announced that
the AGCO brand would be phased out leaving the
Massey Ferguson and Challenger tractor brands.

acquired the GSI Holdings, Corp. for 940
million. GSI, headquartered in Assumption,
Illinois, is a major manufacturer of
grain-handling equipment which had been posting
sales of more than 700 million annually. As a
leading manufacturer of grain storage systems and
a full line supplier of swine and poultry
production equipment, GSI equipment is constantly
evolving to give farmers more control, with less
complexity, over their operations. Technology
continues to change farming practices. GSI
integrates technology into its product designs to
provide industry leading reliability, efficiency,
and ease of use, according to Jeff Feldkamp,
GSIs Director of Engineering North America.

117A Quote from The Industry Has Changed, Have
You? The AGCO Story by G. Barton Pennington,
Forrest E. Stegelin, and Steven C. Turner
University of Georgia American Agricultural
Economics Association Salt Lake City, Utah August
2-5, 1998 The AGCO Corporations story is
truly a remarkable one. From its unorthodox
beginning in 1990 as the ailing Deutz-Allis
(formerly Allis-Chalmers) to its growth to over
18 internationally recognized name brands
representing 14 product lines, AGCO corporations
success is attributed to its founder Robert
Ratliffs vision and determination. In seven
years, AGCO has emerged as the third largest farm
equipment manufacturer (in terms of market share)
in the world (21, behind New Holland and John
Deere) and also as third largest in the United
States (15, behind John Deere and Case with 50
and 20 respectively). Copyright 1998 by G.
