- Emily Roddas real name is Jennifer June Rowe.
She was born in Sydney on April 2, 1948 (age
66),and completed MA (Hons) in English and
literature at Sydney University in 1973. She
worked in publishing for many years, as an editor
and then a publisher at Angus Robertson, before
becoming the editor of the Australian Womens
Weekly magazine in 1988. - Always a keen reader and writer, Emily began
writing childrens stories in her spare time to
entertain her young daughter Kate. She submitted
her first manuscript to Angus Robertson using a
pseudonym-her grandmothers name, Emily Rodda-to
make sure she got and honest opinion of her work
from colleagues. -
4The plot
- Rye has lived all his life in the walled city of
Weld, and every year he and his family (his
mother and two older brothers) have endured the
terrifying attacks of the winged Skimmers with
their taste for human meat. But the attacks are
growing worse, the Warden seems indecisive and
his brothers speak of the need for changemaybe
even rebellion. When the Warden calls for
Volunteers to find and destroy the enemy who
sends the Skimmers to destroy Weld's populace,
red-headed Rye and his widowed mother watch in
silence when first bold Dirk then subtle Sholto
go forth into the unknown. They do not return and
Rye realizes that to save his family, if not his
city, he must go in search of his brothers.
Young, unskilled, innocent and sensitive, Rye is
motivated not by the desire for fame or glory but
the desperate need to ease his mother's griefand
his own.

Beginning
The story starts in a place called Weld on the
island of drone, This is a city surrounded by
walls from the breach of skimmers (Winged
monsters), it is also the city where the main
characters live such as Rye.

Middle
The middle gets more interesting when Rye enters
the golden door with Sofia (A person who he meets
on the way), he goes on an adventurous journey
with her in the search of the skimmer base and
his brother

Ending
In the end Ryes wish comes true, half of it
because he found one of his brothers, Dirk, now
he has to find Sholto in the 2 remaining doors,

- Rye, the main character who takes this daring
journey through the mysterious doors risking his
life not knowing whats next, for a quest to save
his brothers and destroy the skimmers forever. - Sonia, the second main character who joins Rye in
his journey after blackmailing him to take her to
the skimmer base otherwise she would tell the
warden that hes under 18. - Dirk, the main characters brother who was so
brave to go through the door second in the search
for his brother Sholto. - Sholto, the main characters other brother, dares
to go trough the door first leaving behind his
family, although hes at the beginning of the
story he wont appear until the second book, The
sliver door.

- The author created a believable by using literary
techniques, which are adjectives, verbs, adverbs
and etc. but the main ones were similes and
metaphors such as He screamed like a dying cat

10Why would my class mates like this book
- Theres a lot of reasons to read this book, the
main reason my classmates will enjoy this book is
that the storyline gets in really depth and has a
lot of suspense which makes this book draw you
into the storyline - Another reason is that this book has a lot of
literary techniques such as adjectives, verbs,
and past tense which gives this story a true
believable world for the audience to enjoy.
