Lyor Cohen is a longtime Media Entertainment
Executive, and has been in the music business for
over three decades. He got his start as a Road
Manager for Rush Management, serving the needs of
such industry-changing groups as Run-D.M.C. and
the Beastie Boys. Lyor Cohen was a Rush
Management Road Manager from 1984 to 1987, and
then became Russell Simmons partner in the
management company. From there he went on to be
the President and Co-Owner of the Def Jam label
for over 10 years. Lyor Cohen is also considered

After selling Def Jam to Universal for hundreds
of millions of dollars, Lyor was asked to create
a new music division for Universal comprised of
Mercury, Island, and the newly acquired Def jam,
and thus became known for his consolidation
prowess. When he founded the Island Def Jam Music
Group, Lyor Cohen, who is now, formerly the
President of the Island Def Jam Music Group, was
leader of Island Def Jam Music Group from 1998 to
2003, providing expert management to the company
for over five years. As head of the group, Lyor
Cohen was responsible for the cultivation and
growth of numerous artists and labels.
