Title: Hearing Aids

1
Hearing Aids
2
  • Hearing aid is an electronic device which
amplifies sound to aid people who have a hearing
    problems

3
How a hearing aid works
  • A microphone picks up sounds.
  • Sounds are analyzed by the processing chip.
  • Processed sounds are sent to the amplifier.
  • Amplified sounds are sent to the loudspeaker.
  • Sounds are transmitted by the loudspeaker into
the inner ear where they are transformed into
    electrical impulses.
  • Impulses are picked up by the brain where they
    are processed.

4
Difference between analog and digital hearing aids
  • Analog hearing aids make continuous sound waves
louder. These hearing aids essentially amplify
all sounds (e.g., speech and noise) in the same
way. Analog hearing aids are becoming less and
    less common.
  • Digital hearing aids have all the features of
analog hearing aids, but they convert sound waves
into digital signals and produce an exact
duplication of sound. Digital hearing aids
analyze speech and other environmental sounds.

5
How digital hearing aids work
  • Unlike analog aids, in digital hearing aids,
sound enters the device is broken into multiple
frequency bands. Each band is then amplified by
the amount necessary to return the wearer's
hearing to normal levels at that band.
  • With digital technology, devices can now break
sound into as many as 48 different bands. This
feature makes the sound quality provided of a
digital hearing aids far better than the analogue
    technologies.

6
Hearing Aid Models
  • Hearing aids are available in an extensive range
of colors and sizes. Below chart shows some of
the more common hearing aid models available.

7
Hearing Aid Categories
  • Since hearing loss problems differ with people to
people, there are many different models and
styles of hearing devices are there to choose
    from.
  • Generally Hearing aids can be placed in three
    categories.
  • Custom in-the-ear models (ITE)
  • Behind-the-ear (BTE)
  • Receiver in the ear (RITE)

8
Custom in-the-ear models
  • Custom in-the-ear models are custom made to fit
the contours of your ear canal.
  • Full shell
  • Half shell Canal
  • Mini canal
  • Completely in the canal (CIC)
  • Invisible in the Canal (IIC)
  • Depending on the specific type, it may be more or
    less invisible in your ear.

9
Behind-the-Ear models (BTE)
  • In this type, case of this hearing aid is hidden
behind your ear and connected to a molded
receiver that fits snugly in the outer ear. These
hearing aids offer a volume control and/or push
button that allow selection from multiple
    programs for specific performance situations.

10
Receiver-in-Canal
  • This model combines the advantages of both the
    behind-the-ear and custom (in-the-ear) models.
The microphone has been moved to the outer ear
and is connected to the main body of the hearing
aid by a thin transparent tube.
  • The result is a virtually invisible hearing
instrument that offers Open-fitting comfort and
    maximum wind noise suppression.
