CA What is wisdom teeth?There are 4 molars
that are present in the teeth out of which the
3rd molar is called the wisdom teeth. Normally
a wisdom teeth is developed during the age
ranging from 17 to 25 years of age. As the name
suggests wisdom it is an assumption by the
people that they get more wiser as age advances
because a wisdom teeth appears in a later stage
when compared to other teeth. But practically
speaking it has nothing to do with a persons
wisdom or intelligence. Risks Involved There
are certain amount of risks involved when
undergoing an extraction of wisdom tooth. A
person may experience pain and swelling in the
gums and tooth socket at the point where the
tooth was removed. There will be profuse bleeding
of the gums which could last for 1 day. A person
may face difficulty while opening the jaw. It
takes a very long time to heal. Wisdom tooth
extraction may further cause damage to existing
teeth in case a person has undergone root canal,
dental crowns treatment.

Post surgery precautions to be takenA patient
may need to take extra care after undergoing a
surgery for extraction of wisdom teeth. A patient
is supposed to have a gentle bite on the gauze
pad from time to time and change it periodically
as it will be soaked with blood. Be careful not
to bite the tongue, interior portion of the cheek
and the lip for few days. Always use a pillow for
head rest and never lie flat on a bed as it may
increase the bleeding. To reduce the pain caused
due to extraction of wisdom tooth, one can place
an ice pack on the front portion of the cheek to
have a temporary relief or can also place a cloth
dipped in luke warm water for couple of days.
Avoid all physical form of activities and take
complete rest and relax after the surgery. Go for
soft and liquid food like pudding, cornflakes,
soups and avoid hard food articles for few days.
Smoking is totally prohibited for 24 hours and
gently rinse the mouth with warm salt water.
Avoid touching the extracted part where the
wisdom tooth is removed by tongue or by
