9The style has changed greatly over the last 60
years. The greatest change is the switch from
newsprint to magazine style. The publication has
been produced in colour since the 1980s, giving
NME from then onwards a different feel to the pre
1980s editions. Cover design has also vastly
changed, at first a range of images were used
but as time progressed, the magazine cover began
to increasingly focus on one key signifier or one
band. Only in the last 14 years has the magazine
began to advertise competitions and use plugs and
puffs on the cover, before that it was purely
masthead, headline and image with limited
additional text or in some cases concert
promotion. The example from 2014 is much more
paired down than its predecessor with minimal
text and clutter. The edition from the 1960s
advertises a concert, making it somewhat an
exception from the others as the rest advertise
bands or singers. The logo has also radically
changed, especially since the publication became
a magazine it has adopted the classic
logo.
