  • What is the classification of natural resources?

3
What does mean Sustainability? (1/4)
  • The word sustainability has become a global
    buzzword as a potential solution
  • For the many problems facing society today
  • 1- International problems,
  • 2- Regional problems,
  • 3- Local problems,

4
What does mean Sustainability? (2/4)
  • As developing nations struggle with issues of
  • 1- Overpopulation,
  • 2- Disease,
  • 3- Political conflict,
  • 4- Developed
  • countries,
  • 5- Infrastructure
  • deterioration,
  • 6- Pollution,
  • 7- Unlimited urban expansion with limited
    resources,

What does mean Sustainability? (3/4)
  • The word sustainable means able to be
    maintained.
  • However, from the number of published books and
articles in professional journals, there seem to
be many contrasting views and opinions as to
    exactly what sustainability is,
  • and how it can be achieved or in some cases,
whether it is an elusive dream of attaining the
    so-called heaven on earth.

6
What does mean Sustainability? (4/4)
  • Basic concepts of Sustainable
  • Three basic concepts are involved in sustainable
    measures
  • 1- Living within certain limits of the earths
    capacity to maintain life,
  • 2- Understanding the interconnections among
  • Environment, Society, Economy,
  • 3- Maintaining a fair distribution
  • of resources and opportunity for
  • this generation and the next.
  • They have planted for us to eat,
  • and we are planting for them to eat

7
sustainability properties (1/2)
  • In understanding its complexity, one popular
framework shows sustainability issues as being
    classified into three categories
  • 1- Environmental,
  • 2- Social/political,
  • 3- Economic issues,

Definition and classification of natural
resources (1/2)
  • Traditionally, literature on natural resource
    management distinguishes between
  • renewable and non-renewable resources.
  • However, in a sense most natural resources are
    renewable.
  • They are only distinguished by the length of time
it takes for them to be reproduced.
  • While shrimps can be reproduced
  • by millions each year,
  • oil takes billions of years to be reproduced
  • by geological processes.
  • Hence, time is a crucial factor in the analysis
  • of natural resources.

10
Definition and classification of natural
resources (2/2)
  • A common classification of natural resources
includes the following types of resources
  • 1- non-renewable and non-recyclable resources,
    such as fossil fuels,
  • 2- non-renewable but recyclable resources, such
    as minerals,
  • 3- fast renewable resources, such as fish,
  • 4- slowly renewable resources, such as forests,
    --- ? soil
  • 5- environmental resources, such as air, water
    and soil,
  • 6- flow resources, such as solar and wind energy,
