MEANING OF NORMALITY AND ABNORMALITY
  • Normality is the state of being normal.
  • Behaviour can be normal for an individual when it
    is consistent with the most common behaviour for
    that person.

  • Abnormality Abnormality is the significant
    deviation from commonly accepted patterns of
    behavior, emotion or thought. Behavior is
    considered abnormal when it is out of the
    ordinary, causes some kind of impairment, or
    consists of undesirable behavior.

  • Normality The absence of illness and the
    presence of state of well being called normality.
  •  A strong sense of identity and positive
    self-esteem
  • Autonomy and independence
  • Ability to maintain healthy interpersonal
    relationships.

    self-actualization.

  • Abnormality is sometimes defined as the
    subjective experience of feeling not normal
    Example feeling intense anxiety, unhappiness,
    or distress.

  • One way to define abnormality is to consider when
    behavior violates social norms or makes other
    anxious.
  • This definition is problematic. Cultural
    diversity affects how people view social norms
    what is seen as normal is one culture may be seen
    as abnormal in another.

  • Four definitions of abnormality are
  • Deviation from social norms Social norms are a
    set of rules for behaviour based on a set of
    moral and conventional standards within society.

Statistical infrequency A very small subset of
the population have an IQ below 70pts. Such
people are statistically rare. We regard them
as having abnormally low IQs Failure to
function adequately From an individuals point
of view abnormality can be judged in terms of
not being able to cope with day to day
living. Under this definition, a person is
considered abnormal if they are unable to cope
with the demands of everyday life. Deviation
