1st Buddhist Council
  • The 1st Buddhist Council was being held
    immediately after the death of Buddha
  • Many Scholars believe it was held around 400 BC
  • The Objective to preserve the sayings of Buddha
    and monastic discipline or rules.
  • Abhidhamma Pitaka was also believed to have been
    included in 1st Buddhist Council

2nd Buddhist Council
  • The 2nd Buddhist Council was held in 4th Century
    BC, in order to solve the dispute aroused between
    Vajjiputtakas Monks and Yasa, a monk
  • The event was mainly attended by the Western and
    Southern Scholars
  • This event was held by 700 monks
  • The Committee of 8 monks found against
    Vajjiputtakas Monks
  • It was considered as a historic event in the
    Buddhism religion

3rd Buddhist Council
  • The 3rd Buddhist Council was held in 251 BCE
  • In the Popular Beliefs, 3rd Buddhist Council was
    convened by the Mauryan King Ashoka
