• Professional Virtual Community is a combination
  of virtual community and professional community.
  Virtual communities are defined as social systems
  of networks of individuals who use computer
  technologies to mediate their relationships. They
  are groups of people who interact primarily
  through information and communication
  technologies (ICT).  
• Professional virtual communities are comprised of
  employees or freelance professionals who interact
  about topics related to their paid work.

Increasingly, organizations develop professional
virtual communities for knowledge transfer, so as
to draw on a vast pool of expertise, or to enable
employees to help each other when problems arise.
  Such communities are perceived as digital
ecosystems, where individuals with different
levels of interest and resources participate and
provide resources in a give-and-take that creates
benefits for all. Sustaining such a community is
not easy, and is not simply a technology issue.
