Ownership Operating Model
  • Lionsgate is a public trading company, this means
    that is it not part of a conglomerate.
  • A major Conglomerate in media that owns
    subsidiaries, would be Disney is a Conglomerate
    and owns different companies like ABC and Pixar.
  • Lionsgate name some of their products after the
    main conglomerate, for example Lionsgate Films is
    named after Lionsgate.
  • Lionsgate tend to own smaller companies, they
    arent Commercial, but they bring out big movies
    like Twilight Saga and The Hunger Games.

Marketing Position
Lionsgate is a big production company, but isnt
considered a major conglomerate, in terms of the
charts, Lionsgate had three major films released
and topped ratings with The Quiet ones, The
Expendables 3 and also major children's franchise
The Hunger Games- Mocking Jay part 1. Also
Lionsgate are quite high up in marketing
positioning, as they currently have two major
Television programmes airing on Netflix and ABC.
Nashville and Orange is the New Black.

As Lionsgate is a Public Trading Company,
Lionsgate Entertainment own their own business
but isnt seen as a major conglomerate. Lionsgate
have their own divisions, which deal with some
of their bigger products

Competitors
There are main conglomerates that are major
competitors with Lionsgate, e.g. Viacom, Disney
and News corp. but Lionsgate could be seen as a
major competitor with smaller subsidiaries like
Fox and the CW.

Lionsgate Entertainment.
  • The Hunger Games has been a massive franchise
    since bringing out their first film in 2012,
    which on opening weekend grossed 152,535,747
    (USA). And brought Lionsgate 691,247,768 from
    worldwide sales. Lionsgate then carried on with
    Catching Fire and MockingJay Part 1 and 2.
    Catching Fire on its open weekend brought the
    company 158,074,286 open weekend and totalled at
    864,912,963 worldwide. The newest edition
    MockingJay part 1 brought  121,897,634 on
    opening weekend. Lionsgate also produced teen
    focused film sagas Twilight (2008-12) and
    Divergent (2014). Which means they are focused on
    Teenage audience, this also includes Warm Bodies
    (2013), Enders Game (2013) and The Perks of Being
    a Wallflower (2012) which are all films aimed for
    a younger audience.
  • Other Than the Teen Audiences, Lionsgate have
    worked with other big franchises that appeal to
    an older audience, for example, The Expendables
    (2010-14) and RED (2010-12). Lionsgate are a
    smaller company to the big five Conglomerates,
    but pushing ahead with the marketing positions as
    they have starting topping film and TV charts,
    with The Hunger Games and Orange is the new
    Black.

Operating Model Viacom own mainly TV and film
companies such as MTV and Paramount. They also
own smaller companies like Spike, an American
broadcast channel, they show a lot of major TV
shows like CSI.
Ownership Viacom is major conglomerate company,
its commercial and not for public service.

Competitors Some of Viacoms main competitors are
other film industries that could compromise
Paramount and DreamWorks for example, Lionsgate,
Time Warner and Miramax. Also Disney and BBC
could compromise Nickelodeon and Comedy Central.

Marketing Position As Viacom is a conglomerate,
it is very high up in the marketing position, as
they own a lot of big companies like Paramount
and MTV but they still have smaller companies
like CMT and Spike.

Operating Model Disney Have many big companies
owning mostly Disney based companies for example
Walt Disney Pictures and Disney World/Land. They
are very commercial, as you have to pay to watch
their channel.
Ownership Disney is a major Conglomerate, being
one of the top five. They are not for public
service.

Marketing Position Disney is one of the biggest
Conglomerate by revenue in 2010, they also topped
charts in 2013 with Disney film Frozen which
brought the company 4,704,940 (UK) on opening
weekend and worldwide it has earned the company
1.2 billion in box office revenue.
Competitors Disney is know world wide and is one
of the main competitors for other Conglomerates
and independent companies such as Viacom,
Lionsgate and Time Warner. Walt Disney Pictures
is mainly in competition with DreamWorks and
Paramount both owned by Viacom.

Ownership Channel 4 is publically-owned company
and is commercially funded, based in the UK.
Operating Model Channel 4 work across
television, film and digital media. They own a
few TV station such as E4 and More 4, they also
own an Film production Company Film 4 productions.

Competitors As 4 isnt a conglomerate and is
Publically-owned and also focuses mainly on TV,
their main competitors are ITV and BBC, Looking
at ratings, people are mainly watching BBC and
ITV for Im a celeb, X factor and Strictly Come
Dancing.
