The History of Wide Leg Pants
  • Unlike flares and bell bottoms, wide leg jeans
are evenly wide throughout the whole leg, and
that includes thighs, knees and calves. They can
maintain straight tailored lines or be baggy.
Over the years, this particular style has gone in
and out of fashion and is always associated with
different genres of music and lifestyles.
  • In the 1960s and 1970s wide leg pants for women
became extremely popular. In the 1980s, they went
out of fashion as workout wear and baggy shirts
became popular and they were paired with stirrup
    pants and skinny jeans.
  • In the 1990s some hip hop artists popularized
oversized pants and pair them with tight tops,
and wide leg pants made a comeback. They often
featured a button fly front and colors like red,
white and purple were particularly popular. In
the late 1990s wide leg pants for women were
worn as a contrast to crop pants, which were the
symbol of many famous music artists like Gwen
    Stefani.
  • In the 1990s, skateboarders worn wide leg pants
as their signature style and they paired them
with skate shoes and wallet chains. Avril Lavigne
popularized them in 2000s, as she wore them with
skate sneakers, mens ties and tank tops. Today,
wide leg pants for women are extremely popular in
    womens fashion.
