- A root canal is a procedure mainly performed to
repair and save a tooth that's badly decayed or
becomes infected. - During this procedure, the surgeon removes the
pulp as well as the nerve and the cleans and
seals the inside of the tooth. If not treated on
time, the tissue which surrounds the tooth will
become infected and would result in the formation
of abscesses. - In medical science, Root Canal is the term used
to describe the natural cavity within the center
of the tooth. The pulp or pulp chamber is the
soft area within the root canal and nerve of the
tooth lies withing the root canal. The nerve of
the tooth is not that important to its health and
also function after the tooth gets emerged
through the gums. The only function of the nerve
is to give you sensation of hot or cold and its
presence or absence will not affect the
day-to-day functioning of the tooth.
3 Procedure
- Initially, the surgeon makes an opening through
the back of a front tooth or the crown of a molar
or pre molar - After the surgeon removes the diseased pulp,
he/she cleans the pulp chamber and the root
canals, enlarges and shapes them for being filled - If more than one visit is required, a temporary
filling is placed in the crown opening to protect
the tooth between dental visits - The surgeon then removes the temporary filling
and permanently fills the pulp chamber and the
root canal. - Finally, the surgeon places a crown over the
tooth to restore its natural shape as well as
appearance. If the tooth is extremely broken
down, a post might be required to build it up
before placing a crown
4 Cost
The cost for this procedure differs depending
on the severity of the problem and the tooth
affected. Several dental insurance policies cover
this treatment. An estimate for the cost of this
treatment (doesn't include a dental restoration
following the procedure) executed by a general
dentist could range anywhere from INR 3,000 to
INR 10,000 depending on the tooth to be
treated. It's quite possible that your treated
and restored teeth last a lifetime with proper
care. As there is possibility of the tooth
decaying occurring again in treated teeth, good
oral hygiene and regular examination of the teeth
are essential to prevent further problems. To
determine the success or failure of Root Canal
Treatment in Pune speak with your dentist ahead
of the procedure.
