What is Smoke meter?

• Smoke meters, also referred to as opacity meters,
  detect and measure the amount of light blocked in
  smoke emitted by diesel engines from cars,
  trucks, ships, buses, motorcycles, locomotives
  and large stacks from industrial operations.
• Partial flow continuous gas sampling combined
  with a heated and temperature controlled smoke
  chamber compensates for changes in pressure and
  test conditions to give you the most accurate
  readings possible.
• All modern Diesel Exhaust Smoke Meters should
  measure diesel emissions (dark smoke) in Opacity
  (N) and/or Smoke Density (K) according to
  SAEJ1667(Society of Automotive Engineers)
• .

• The smoke meter readout displays the smoke
  density giving a measure of the efficiency of
  combustion. This makes the smoke meter an
  excellent diagnostic tool to ensure proper
  maintenance of diesel engines for improved fuel
  economy and protection of the environment
• In general, smoke and opacity meters are much
  simpler (some of them very simple) and less
  costly in comparison to most other instruments
  used for PM measurement.
• Smoke Meter meets all the requirements and norms
  as specified by Central Motor Vehicles Act and is
  approved by ARAI, Pune.

Working of smoke meter
Bosch smoke meter a fixed volume of the exhaust
gas is drawn through a white filter paper of
specified quality. The density of smoke stain
obtained on the filter paper is evaluated using a
reflectance meter which gives the measure of
smoke density of diesel exhaust gas

Types of smoke meters

• Laser smoke meter-
• The laser smoke meter model LEX-635s is a new
  type of innovative smoke meter to be able to
  measure mass soot concentration continuously in
  real-time in exhaust gas from IC engines. Sokken
  model LEX-635s measures the light absorption and
  reflection by the soot in engine exhaust gas by
  emitting laser beam into the exhaust gas and the
  mass concentration is calculated by these
  results.

• OBD Smoke Meter-
• The model SM-501 enables to measure the opacity
  by particle matters at the tail pipe with running
  diesel or GDI vehicles. It is suitable for the
  On-board measurement due to the light weight,
  portable size and enables to operate a battery.

• Filter paper type Smoke Meter
• GSM-3Sokken model GSM-3 is a reliable Smoke
  Meter for exhaust emissions from diesel vehicles
  and gasoline direct injection engines. The Smoke
  Meter is fully compliant with JIS D8004 and the
  regulations in Japan and has been much exercised
  for many years
