Sump Pumps Failures How To Prevent Them
2
Spring is upon us finally! Warm weather,
beautiful landscapes, and a whole lot of rain. Is
your home prepared for all of that rain this
year? This week we wanted to offer some tips and
education on sump pumps and why maintaining them
is so important.
3
Below are the 4 most common types of sump pump
problems.1. Frozen or Clogged Discharge LinesIf
you do not keep your discharge lines free of ice
and debris, they will not be able to discharge
the water from the sump pump pit causing
flooding within your home.
4
A simple solution to this problem would be to
install a special grated discharge line
attachment. This fitting is placed near your home
on the discharge line. It includes openings that
give water a way to flow out of the pipe if the
line is blocked further down.
5
2. Clogged Sump PumpsThe main cause to the pumps
clogging, is a dirty sump pump pit. Over time,
debris will gather in the pit and slowing clog
the pump causing it to fail.
6
3. Sump Pump Switch MalfunctionSump pumps know
that the water level is rising due to the help of
a special float switch. As the water level goes
up, the switch floats upwards, naturally turning
on the sump pump when it reaches a certain level.
7
If these switches clog, become jammed, or (in the
case of cheap sump pump models) become tangled in
the rest of the system, the sump pump switch will
either stop working entirely or be stuck in the
on position, meaning that it will run nonstop.
Either way, your sump pump isnt doing its job.

4. No Power To The PumpOccasionally, the problem
is a very easy fix. A sump pump could be
operating just fine, but has no power to run.
This could be because someone unplugged it to
clean the pit or the circuit may have tripped.
9
Always check the power cord and circuits first
before calling your local plumber. If you have a
single sump pump installed in your basement or
crawl space, your home is one mechanical failure
away from a flood.
10
A failing sump pump can happen at any time, and
when it does, many homeowners dont realize there
is a problem until the basement floods. We
recommend having a battery backup pump installed
to protect your home against flooding in the
event of a power outage or main pump failure.
