Answering Your Questions about Solar Panel
Installation inthe UK
  • Solar panel installation is popular in the
UK, particularly in certain counties. For
instance, solar panel installation Essex has
doubled in recent years, and is helping to ensure
that the South East stays well ahead of the curve
in solar panel installation. However, some people
are reluctant to install solar panels. For some,
its because they cant afford the initial layout
costs thats fair enough solar panels are
expensive. For others, its because they dont
understand the process properly and they have a
    few unanswered questions.

  • Weve written this article with the latter type
of person in mind. Here, were going to address
some of the questions that you undoubtedly have
about solar panel installation. So, whether
youre looking for solar panel installation
Essex, the South East, or anywhere else in the
country, and you have a few unanswered questions,
this article should help to answer these.
  • Do Solar Panels Work In Winter?
  • Clearly, winter in the UK is somewhat lacking
sunlight. On the shortest day of the year, the
21st December, we have 8hrs of daylight. Thats
not a lot of time to generate electricity. Were
not going to lie electricity production does
reduce during winter. So, in the winter, your
solar panels will not produce as much electricity
as they do in summer. However, there are two ways
in which this is largely irrelevant

  • If you have batteries, you can store some summer
electricity for use during the winter.
  • If you are registered with the Feed inTariff
(the government initiative whereby solar panel
owners are able to sell electricity back to the
grid), you will have sold electricity in the
summer. This money can be used to pay the
electricity that you use in winter that has come
    from the grid.
  • Do Solar Panels Work When Its Cloudy?
  • In the UK, its quite cloudy. We dont get very
many sunny days. However, while this has some
effect on the amount of electricity generated,
its quite negligible. Solar panels work by
converting UV rays into electricity using a
photovoltaic material (in the case of most solar
panels in the UK, we use polycrystalline silicon
which has the cool property of changing UV in to
voltage). These panels dont need direct sunlight
per se, but more direct UV, which they get in the
UK especially if the panels point due south.

  • Do You Need A Special Kind of Roof?
  • You dont need a special roof, but your roof
does need to satisfy some conditions
  • It needs to be south-facing. East-facing and
West-facing roofs are ok, but theyre not as
    efficient as south-facing roofs. However,
    north-facing roofs are a no-no.
  • It needs to be strong enough to support the
panels and the frames. A building surveyor will
need to assess the roof for strength. They will
check the inside and the outside of the roof.
  • It needs to be free from objects that cast
shadows over the panels. For instance, other
buildings or trees. You can deal with things like
trees, but if a building over shadows the panels,
then your roof is probably unsuitable.
