Typical features of horror/thriller movie posters

• Dark colours The colour scheme of a poster is
  very important for conveying the mood of a film.
  Due to convention, movie posters for thrillers
  and horrors use dark colours, and sometimes red.
  This is because of the connotations these colours
  have, for example, the colour red might connote
  blood.
• Secluded and run down areas Its common to see
  horror movie posters where the background
  includes a secluded area, such as the woods, or
  an old derelict building. This is because they
  are typical settings for horror films, and
  therefore give us information about the story of
  the film.
• Close-ups of characters Usually, if a horror
  movie poster features characters, it has a close
  up of the main characters face showing their
  frightened expression. This is to set the tone of
  the film so that people know what to expect when
  they see it.

The Blair Witch Project is an example of a horror
movie poster that shows examples of all of these
conventions.

Inspiration for My Poster

Boy A

• I intend to attempt to make a poster for
  Pandoras Box based on this one. Rather than have
  the newspaper in the background, I could overlay
  the trees from the woodland scene onto a picture
  of Pandora. To make it look more like a horror
  movie poster I could use red text and make
  Pandora look scared.

Perfume The Story of A Murderer

• Although this poster will be difficult to
  recreate, I would like to attempt a poster based
  on this one. Rather than using the flowers, I
  could replace them with tree branches.

Bloodwork

• I like the idea behind this poster as it will
  allow me to include both of the main characters
  in the film. I also think I could adapt this to
  make it suited to my film by replacing the DNA in
  the middle with a tree from the woodland scene.
  This also allows me to use the horror poster
  convention of close-ups.
