2Arcade games were the beginning of a revolution
that complete transformed the face of
entertainment around the world. Before the
introduction of what are considered now as
classic arcade games, consumers had very few
options when it came to entertainment and
leisure.

consumers largely enjoyed television and radio.
Both of these mediums had previously experienced
their golden age as it were and the consumers
were looking for something more personal and
interactive with which to spend their time.

5These desires were realized in the 1970s when
arcades came onto the scene. For a time, these
games captivated millions. Players would flock to
arcades were dozens of these arcade machines were
set up so that users could enjoy a great variety
of different games. Groups of friends would come
with rolls of quarters, anxious to try their hand
at beating the next level of their favorite
games. This trend continued up through the 1990s
until superior at home gaming consoles began to
dominate the market.
6At this time, the market largely saw these arcade
games as antiquated and inferior to the newer
games with improved graphics, controls and
availability. As the sentiment of the video game
playing audience shifted away from arcade games,
many of these classic games departed the
conscience of the general public.

8If it were not for the hard work of some
dedicated individuals, many of these titles may
have vanished altogether. Thankfully, many of
these titles were preserved through the sale of
arcade machines to private individual collectors.
9While this solved the problem of physically
preserving these titles, this did not address the
issue of general availability for those that were
still interested in playing classic arcade games.
This concern was addressed by fans of classic
arcade games, but a solution could not feasibly
be reached until the advent of public Internet
access.

11At this time, fans of retro gaming were able to
network and collectively reach a solution for the
general availability of classic arcade games for
those that were not able to acquire the physical
hardware itself. Programmers and software
developers within the community were able to
develop software that would simulate the
operation of these classic arcade games on the
personal computer.
12The hope of the project was thatmuch like the
home gaming consolespersonal computers would
become capable of storing and playing multiple
games. This way, fans of classic arcade games
could store multiple games on their own machines
for use at their leisure.

14After years of refining and updating the
emulation software that was started around the
turn of the century, this dream has largely been
realized today. Thousands of classic arcade games
are available to download for free online and
multiple emulators exist to make those games
playable for the retro gaming fan.
15Third party controllers have also been created to
recreate as much of the stand-up arcade
experience as possible. These beloved
classicsthat were once only available to wealthy
collectorsare now available to all for free
online.
