Dr Sarfaraz Baig is a GI, Laparoscopic and
Bariatric Surgeon based out of Belle Vue Clinic
Kolkata. He has research publications on
Gallbladder stones, Colorectal cancer, Acute
pancreatitis, bowel intussusception, duodenal
tumors and biliary fistulas. He has authored a
chapter on Surgical Nutrition and written two
monographs- one on CBD diseases and another on
Liver Surgery.

If one has a BMI( body mass index) calculated as
weight (in kgs)/ height (m2) of 40 or more OR BMI
of 35 one comorbid condition like diabetes /
hypertension one is a candidate for considering
bariatric surgery (surgery for the morbid obese).

Piles and anal fistula are common diseases
affecting a common man. In piles there are
dilated vessels carrying blood, which bleed on
passing stool.An anal fistula is an abnormal
tract between skin and the anus. Stool can enter
this tract and cause infection leading to
discharge of pus from the wound near the
anus.After years of research the most
significant advancement in anal surgery is that
now surgery for piles and fistula can be done by
novel techniques without leaving any wound and
significant pain.

gastrosurgery dealing with diseases of liver,
bile duct, pancreas and gall bladder. Special

Hernias are bulges in the belly where intestines
and abdominal fat come out under the skin through
a defect. They become more prominent when
coughing or standing.Since laparoscopic repair
of hernias are done by making small holes in the
belly instead of making a large incision, it
makes the procedure less painful, stitchless and
bloodless. It also allows the patient to go back
home in 2-3 days and resume normal activities.

Once formed gallstones may or may not cause
symptoms. It may produce mild symptoms like pain
and indigestion or it may cause severe diseases
such as jaundice, infection, pancreatitis,
etc.Laparoscopic surgery (surgery done through
holes without cutting the belly) will be almost
painless. The hospital stay will usually be 1 to
2 days. Most can join work in 5 to 7 days. Most
