- Mel Steele of Boston is the Chief of
Administration for 1st Armor Protection Services,
using his twelve years of experience as a police
officer dealing with some of Bostons toughest
streets. Steele is especially known for his
reliance on active listening and his work as a
community-based police officer, working with
community leaders and youth to make the streets
of Boston safer.
2Keeping the Streets Safe
Mel Steele knows Boston because he was born and
raised in the Mattapan area of the city. He
attended Westwood High School in nearby Westwood,
Massachusetts through the METCO program, which
provided kids in the inner-city Boston to
experience new scholastic environments in the
suburbs. Steele says that he is still grateful
for this opportunity because it got him away from
the sometimes violent neighborhood he grew up in.
Gang Unit
Mel Steele of Boston was a police officer in the
Gang Unit. The Gang Unit is in charge of keeping
tabs on gang activity in the Boston area. Steele,
as a member of the Gang Unit, showed unusual
courage in his attempts to create better
opportunities for the citys youth. While he was
a police officer, Steele showed excellent
listening and communication skills, especially
with the citys troubled youth.
3Keeping up With the Youth of his Community
Mel Steele of Boston became a police officer over
twelve years ago. In his distinguished time in
Boston as a police officer, he has earned a
reputation for excellent community policing. He
showed a rare willingness to open communication
lines with the community he worked in,
exemplified by his inclusion in the Youth
Violence Strike Force.
True Leader
Mel Steele of Boston has always exemplified all
of the characteristics of a great leader. In high
school, a friend got him to try out for lacrosse,
a sport he had never heard of growing up in the
Mattapan neighborhood of Boston. In a short time,
Steele became captain of the lacrosse team and
eventually earned a full athletic scholarship to
the University of Delaware.
4Alternative Options
Mel Steele of Boston got his degree in Sociology
from the University of Delaware, which he
attended on an athletic scholarship. He used his
degree to help incarcerated youth as a counselor
at a prison in Delaware. After that he returned
to Boston to join the police force as a member of
the Youth Violence Strike Force where he used his
skills communicating with children to diffuse
many dangerous situations.
Able to Reach Troubled Youth
Mel Steele of Boston received a Bachelors Degree
in Sociology from the University of Delaware and
went to work at the New Castle County Detention
Center in Delaware because he wanted to use his
degree to help people, not just study them.
Steele then used his experience connecting with
troubled youth to join the Youth Violence Strike
Force as a police officer.
