• Flat Optics is specifically polished and
  flattened surfaces. They are often used as a
  reference to assess the flatness of unknown
  surfaces. The principle method by which an
  optical flat functions is as follows
• Contact is made between the polished surface and
  the surface of unknown flatness.
• Under monochromatic light, dark and light bands
  (interference fringes) form and can be seen.
• The shape of these interference fringes depicts
  the visual illustration of the flatness of the
  unknown surface.
• The surface accuracy is estimated through the
  amount of spacing between the fringes as well as
  their curving.
• A surface with parallel, straight, and evenly
  spaced fringes is indicative of being more flat
  or equally flat as compared to the reference
  surface.
