When should you see a gynecologist
  • Parents are much concerned about the coming of
age daughters. They become rather serious to ask
their daughters to have a gynecologic exam. The
gynecologic exam is an important part of
healthcare and plays a vital role for all women.
The basic purpose for going to check your
reproductive health to see a gynecologist is to
evaluate the size and shape of the uterus (womb)
and ovaries, to do a pap smear to identify the
early signs of cervical cancer, and to screen
    sexually transmitted diseases.

  • According to the fertility doctors, age is an
important factor for every girl as far as their
reproductive health is concerned. According to
them, teenage girls should see a gynecologist
once or twice between ages 13 and 17 to discuss
    sexually transmitted infections and questions
about their bodies change and contraception. When
girls turn 18 or when they become sexually
active, the examination may also be necessary for
concerns like abdominal (belly) pain, irregular
or menstrual periods, or vaginal discharge. Even
a women who has never had sex till 18, can gave a
    gynecologic exam

  • Young women and adolescents should start having
gynecologic examinations when they turn 18 or
when they first become sexually active (if that
occurs before the age of 18). The examination may
also be necessary before the age of 18 for
concerns like abdominal (belly) pain, irregular
or painful menstrual periods, or vaginal
discharge. A young woman who has never had sex
before can have a gynecologic exam.

  • On the other hand, the experts recommend women
start getting regular Pap smears at age 21. Even
if you are healthy and the tests prove normal
then you may need to go for tests every year but
your gynecologist can still provide other
important wellness checks, including a pelvic
exam, a breast exam and testing for sexually
transmitted infections. You have to ask questions
about birth control and fertility to your
    gynecologist at regular intervals.

During your gynecologic exam
  • The entire gynecologic exam takes only a few
minutes. The doctor usually asks a female
chaperon to be patient so that the patient feels
more comfortable. This person is either a parent
or another person from the clinic. The
gynecologist then start explaining the matter in
a straightforward way with the girl what she is
doing through the exam. You should feel free to
ask any question during the exam. Afterwards,
its considered normal that you have a small
amount of blood spotting over the next day or so.
Dont forget to check the results for STDs which
takes a few days to come back.
