• This is a question we get every day. There are
  many causes of itching in pets. It is important
  to have your pet examined when you first notice
  symptoms (excessive scratching, redness or hair
  loss.) Delaying treatment may result in
  additional problems requiring more diagnostics
  and additional treatments. Don't try home
  remedies and diets. Using the wrong product can
  worsen the problem, or change how it appears.
  This can make diagnosis more difficult for your
  veterinarian. The first step to correctly
  treating your itchy pet is proper diagnosis. A
  physical exam and your observations give the
  veterinarian important information. Book an
  appointment at the first sign of trouble.
  Treating early will usually save you expense in
  the long run.

• The most common allergy we see is flea allergy.
  Before you say "My dog doesn't have fleas"
  remember it only takes one flea bite from a free
  loader your dog picks up on a walk.
• The second most common allergy in dogs is
  environmental or pollen allergy. Dogs, like
  people, can be sensitive to plants, dust, pollen
  or other environmental irritants.
• Thirdly, we sometimes see skin irritation as a
  result of food allergy. Though much less common,
  food allergy can sometimes result in serious,
  skin irritation.
