Cosmetic Surgery for Your Teeth
Everyone has heard of cosmetic surgery but most
times, it pertains to your face or body. When
you have procedures like root coverage, tooth
contouring, dental implants, or crown
lengthening, these are also referred to as
cosmetic surgery for your teeth. The goal of
these types of procedures is to give you a smile
that is more symmetrical with a little tooth root
and gum exposure. There are other cosmetic
procedures that do not require surgery like using
braces to straighten or correct your teeth, and
teeth whitening.

When you go visit your dentist for root coverage,
it will involve putting surgical tissue grafts
over the root of your tooth that was exposed.
Your gums can recede for a variety of reasons
such as gum disease, age, or other issues causing
you to seek this type of cosmetic surgery. Some
with exposed tooth roots are prone to cavities,
which can lead to dental problems that are more
severe like complete tooth loss or tooth decay so
they may have this procedure done.

When doing tooth contouring general anesthesia
may or may not be used. It depends on whether
the shaping is done near sensitive gum tissue and
if extensive work needs to be done. This
procedure uses small sanding tools or lasers to
remove and sculpt small parts of the misshapen
tooth to create a more symmetrical appearance.

The dental implants used by the dentist are made
of titanium. These are screwed into your jawbone
during a surgical procedure and afterwards you
can have an artificial tooth fastened to the
implant to replace the missing tooth. If you
have several teeth missing you can have multiple
implants done during the surgical procedure.
Before the dentist will do this procedure they
will make sure that you have enough bone to
support the implants along with healthy gums.
These implants can last your entire life. The
entire procedure for this type of Cosmetic
Procedures can take a few months because the
implants placed into the bone have to settle
before the dentist can add a tooth, or teeth.
While waiting for the permanent tooth, or teeth,
the dentist will use temporary teeth

With the crown lengthening procedure the dentist
will remove excessive gum tissue in order to give
you a smile, which will show less of your gum
line. By removing this excessive tissue more of
your tooths crown will be exposed. To
restructure your gums some dentists will choose a
scalpel or soft-tissue lasers. Using lasers will
give you more precise results and faster healing
times. You may need more than one treatment
because your gums have to heal before they can
reassess your smile to see if they need to do
more gum work.
